What do you do when inspiration hits?

I was brushing my teeth tonight when all of a sudden I started having all kinds of ideas for my current writing assignment. I hurried as fast as I could to a notebook so I could write down all my ideas. What do you do when ideas start swarming around in your head? Do you write on any available resource, such as a napkin, or do you just try to remember the ideas until you reach a notebook or computer? I try to always have a notebook but I was getting ready for bed this time.:)

At my job, I write the text to an electronic sign outside of one of our libraries that promotes different events throughout the week. So I do this on a weekly basis. I also promote the Coffee shop inside the library. Sometime a while ago I got it in my head to start writing poems about the coffee and ever since December of last year I've been taking a popular song (usually from the 50's, 60's or 80's era) and revamp the song to be about the coffee shop. Whenever I come up with a new song that'll work, I try my hardest to write it down, even if I have to text message myself on my cell phone to remember it!

My friend and I used to take popular songs and rewrite them. It always ended up being a disaster...a funny disaster though. At least they were funny to us. Have you ever seen the episode of 'Unwrapped' where the couple were coffee artists? It was really cool. They used coffee to paint all kinds of stuff.

No, I don't think I ever saw that unwrapped! That sounds awesome. I Love turning the songs into things about coffee. I only have Monday - Thursday to come up with it because I have to have it finished by 4pm on Thursdays and sometimes my brain won't function! I also fear running out of songs which is crazy I know. My office manager always checks it for grammar before I submit it and he likes to play name that tune. It's great.

Usually I have some sort of notebook or notepad with me for when this happens. When I don't, though, I'll grab whatever scrap, napkin, box top or whatever else I can find that's appropriate to write on so I don't forget the ideas as they start flowing in. I've found that these ideas hit me at the oddest times, so I try to be as prepared as possible.

Most of my inspiration hits when I am asleep - dreaming. I write it down as soon as I wake up, what I can remember anyway. I can't always remember and hope it will come to me later in the day.
Sometimes I get ideas for poems when I am in the shower. I have to hurry and get dressed and get to pen and paper right away and don't stop until I feel I've written a complete work.
