Book club trouble

I am a member of a book club right now that I really wish I wasn't involved with. First, they had me in the system twice and I was receiving double mailings and double the boxes of books. I'm talking 4 boxes at a time. I contacted them several times with the complaint and they finally fixed the problem. Then another problem came up. I noticed on the mailings that one said I owed 2 books to fulfill my committment and another said I owed 3 books. I received a letter the other day saying my membership was about to expire and I owed 4 books! What is going on? I have already contacted them about this before and now I'm waiting again on a reply. I joined a book club to enjoy books but it has only been a headache. I refuse to pay the $64 that they claim I owe because I know I don't have 4 books left to buy. It makes me angry that they expect me to pay that but they aren't being to quick to respond to my question about what I really owe them. Have you ever had trouble with a company like this? Did you have any problems that needed responding to and you were ignored?

I think things like this are generally a bad deal. I haven't dealt with this particular book club, but I did join a music club once, and it was a pain, because they'd send the selection of the month unless you sent back a card saying you didn't want them to send it. Then they'd bill you for the selection, even though you never really ordered it; it was just something they automatically send unless you tell them not to. They are banking on the fact that most people won't get around to sending the card back saying they didn't want anything and will just pay for the music because it's easier than sending it back.
It doesn't surprise me that they are slow to respond to your complaint, but I wouldn't just pay it if it were me. I guess maybe what you could do is photocopy and send them back the letter that said you only owed two books, and let them know that is all you are getting and then you are immediately canceling your membership due to shoddy service.

I was in a music club too. They were pretty good and didn't hound me too much. I canceled with them without any trouble. I think it was BMG. I know what you mean about them figuring you won't get around to sending the card back. I'm guilty of forgeting about it more than once. I ended up just trying to remember to do it online. I don't plan on paying that bill. I think I will do what you suggested and send a photocopy of that letter back. Thanks for the comment.:)

What is the book club called?? My mother had the same problem last summer with some book club that was just sending her the most random things that weren't even books. I'm not sure if it was a bad company

It was Doubleday and they are a well-known company so I really expected better. I understand mistakes can happen, but not that many. It has been such a pain. I get mailings all the time from other companies that I have noticed have the same address. I guess they are getting around.:)

Wow, this sounds like a real nightmare. Those book (and MUSIC) clubs really sucker you in. It seems like a good deal, but I always end up getting stuff I didn't order and having to send it back. I finally quit my book clubs and now belong to a book exchange (where you trade books with other people). No, the books aren't new, but it's a lot less hassle. It's called PaperbackSwap.com and I really enjoy it. There are several of these online book exchange sites. You might want to consider something like this once you are done with Doubleday.
Sorry, I just had to laugh that you are getting "double" shipments from "Double"day.
