We all have local singers in different countries, do you listen to local songs more or do you listen to those English songs from other countries more?
I used to listen to a lot of Chinese songs because I find the lyrics can arouse more commonness in me. But now I tend to listen to English songs more because I find the young local singers don't know how to sing anymore. They are just selling the looks here and I don't really enjoy looking at them and listen to their bad singing skills. What about you?

Hello, wondericequeen, english songs are my local songs,i listen to them more often than foreign songs.Occasionally i will listen to songs from other countries like japanese, korean or chinese songs, although i cannot understand what the songs are about, but i can still enjoy the rhythms.

*laughs* Then you have to find "Faye Wong" in youtube, her voice is amazing and makes you feel really comfortable. She sang one song called "Eyes on Me" and it's in English and I think you will like her! I sometimes listen to French songs as well even though my French is not that good to understand everything but I find the rhythms very fun and unique. I also listened to Japanese songs when I was little, but not as much now!

Oh my French is not good. I can make daily conversation but since I don't have anyone to practice with me here, it makes it very hard. That's why I love watching French movies and songs to refresh my French. I learned that for 3 years when I was in school, and I absolutely love it! I am hoping to go to France one day and experiment my French *laughs*.

I tend to listen to English songs more. I was trying to practice my listening skill and enhance my vocab power when I was younger, and I realised that there're more varieties to choose from than those local songs, and that's when I started exploring different and new aspects of music. Since then, except one or two favorite local singers of my choice, or those local oldies, I seldom listen to local songs.
With the help of technology, everybody can, or at least, they think they can, be a singer; and it's the strange local market trend that visual excitement is more important than everything else, so the most essential criteria for being a local singer nowadays, is a pretty face, rather than a touching voice, and that's why, I do give a thing to the local music industry any more!

And I would say, sometimes, they have weird faces and not pretty ones. It does scare me whenever I switch on the TV or read a magazine and see the "new singers" everywhere. I don't think they have the passion on singing as much as the previous singers and they just can't bring those emotions out through the voices. Also, being shallow is another thing too, sometimes I judge them with their brainless conversations with the media. *sighs*

I agree. Their passion is one thing, and their shallowness is another thing, and that's why I would just stick to the oldies. As I believe, a good performer should be spectacular in all aspects, he/she has to look good, has charming personality, great body figure and attractive voice, can sing and/or act well, and be knowledgeable, at least in the aspect of performing arts. It's a total package which entitle and enable them to earn a living by standing in front of us and performing, just because they have what we don't have, and that's why we call them "stars". So, looking at the nowadays local singers in this city, I just can't help wondering why I have to pay you for doing something I can do even better?

Yes it's really hard to find that "package" in this city. And sometimes I am amazed when I read the magazines and the writers use words like "stars" to describe someone at whom I would look a million times and still don't remember his/ her face. How odd! I guess "stars" should really shine and you will never forget once you see/ hear them.

I am vietnamese. When I am little I don't like to listen to vietnamese songs. I listen to English song because of my friends. I started to listen to chinese songs when I am in college. Because of my mom, I began to listen to one vietnamese singer. His voice is great. I found the song that he sing, the lyrics have meaning that I can relate to.
Now I listen more to other country singers than the American. (I live in America.) MOst of them are chinese and french. But I don't understand chinese. I just listen for the rhythm. French I can understand some, but if I see the lyric I can understand more. My ears fail me. My french speaking skill is not good.

Oh I speak a little French too! Yes my ears fail me every time when I listen to the French songs, I had to listen to it a lot of times to make out the general meanings, but when I get to see the lyrics, I am usually very fast in guessing the meanings.

hmmm...i'm filipino... years before i would have not considered even listening to local songs...local songs of years ago just seemes so tacky, and ...uh!it was either songs from some enlgish band or i wouldn't listen toanything at all...but now, i have developed a sense of pride for our filipino artists...we have really some a long way ever since our tacky song days...so i guess i'd have to say that i would still prefer english songs over local songs, but i can now tolerate local songs since they no longer sound really bad...

Oh I love rock songs too! And I think rock songs are best in English. We do have some bands here trying to sing rock songs but they sound a bit funny! For slow songs, I still prefer songs from my hometown because the lyrics are usually very well-written and they express a lot through a song.

you are right ,there seems to be a lot of talents around the world but most of them don't have it .i listen more to english songs and most of them are the old songs from the 40's till the 90's.the century carries a lot of crappy singers and lousy songs, there only a few of them that really stands out.

Yes, I have to laugh at the "crappy singers"! I think they would hurt our ears if we listen to them! Old songs are good, I love old songs too, those people sing them with their hearts.

Its all about being addicted to music. I personally, is addicted to music. I listen to all kinds of music, not only local or regional ones, but, also, english, spanish etc. too. But, I am very selective, listen to only melodious songs, good lyrics which touches heart. So, I think, it does not matter, which one we listen more, what matters is the good music.

Yes good music is all that matters. If the melody is good, I usually can enjoy myself but sometimes I do wonder what the lyrics says.

I don't have any language preference. If I like the rythm, the lyrics usually that's enough for me to listen. I do have favorite singers, but I listen to others too if I like one or two of their songs

Hi, I am from India, if saying particularly from south India.
Indian music is very rich in history. I listen to lot of film songs in our local films and also hindi films.. It is one of my favourite past time..
English songs are good, but for me it is a bit difficult to follow the lyrics always.. It is very important for me to understand the meaning of the song when listening to it.

i am from the philippines and i am happy to say that there are lots of good singers in our country. some of them even perform worldwide. and i love listening to our local music. they are soothing and really touches me. plus they are like a part of my life knowing that these songs are sung by common filipinos, too.
i also love listening to songs from other countries. especially the old ones. they are full of meaning and were really written well.

i prefer listening to any song which soothes my mood and which ever i feel like hearing.any good music will do and it doesnt have to be englisg songs or local songs in particular.music is a really great medium which help people communicate in their own special way what they feel through their music and their lyrics.

I can tell you that i listen more to local songs, then to english ones.
Once it was different, but then the radio stations here in israel decided to give more chance to young israeli artists, and their are very good songs and artists here.
So my choice is usually, local songs.

I tend to listen to english songs more, but these songs are composed of foreign and Filipino artists. Our artists are very good and can compete overseas.
Maybe because some radio stations tend to play english songs more than Tagalog, our mode of communication is basically a mixture of english and tagalog, but at least they sometimes have theme hours (or day), like all OPM or all old songs.
Cheers!
