I have used the sling with my older two until they were 3 years old. They did not lay in it, but sat in it, on my hip, with the sling helping to support their weight. Their legs dangled out the bottom.

My little guy is also nine months, I don't know that i could ever get him to lay down long enough for him to stay in a sling, in fact he weaned himself from nursing at 6 months, because he didn't like to lay down like a baby anymore! IT's true what they say, that all babies are different. (: I don't neccesarily think it's wrong to keep him in the sling if you both enjoy it. As long as he is getting plenty of time to actively play on the floor, to explore and play, I don't see how it would be harmful at all for him to have some time in the sling as well. He will soon decide he no longer wants to be in their, so you should take advantage of those precious moments while they last. Good luck!
