baby memories

Whats the feeling out there that your child or a child that you know remembers things when they were a baby? My 5 year old has bad feelings toward his birth mother. She left him when he was 8 months old and to this day he will not have anything to do with her. If she or someone who looks like her comes around him he gets very quiet and will sit on my lap or his "Dad's" lap and watch like a hawk. This usually will indicate that he will have a nightmare that night. Don't know what she did or didn't do to him but he has not forgotten. Any thoughts?

He may have lingering memories of very traumatic event involving his birth mother.. he may not remember what it was.. but when he sees or smells someone who reminds him of that event he gets "flashbacks" of it. It is very normal that this happens even at an early age. He may not understand what it was that happened, or may not be able to put it in perspective.. whatever it was it affects him though. If he continues like this or if it gets so intense as to affect his social behavior or mental development, I would suggest seeking help from a child psychologist.

That sounds very weird to me. The earliest I've heard a person can retain memories from is one year of age, but that's what they say. Have you thought about if there is anything that is going on right now between the two? Is the chlid ever alone with his birth mother?
