Have you adopted a dog from a local animal shelter?

We are looking to adopt a dog maybe next spring. I don't want to pay a lot and I know there are good dogs out there that need homes. I am just worried having kids that we would end up with a dog that had problems. Any experiences?

We got our peek mix from the pound last year. It was a $25.00 adoption fee it included his first year of shots. He is really good with the kids and the love him a lot. He is almost 4 years old he loves to run and play with both my boys 13 and 7 years old.

Thank you for such a great reply. I do think we will be able to find a great dog from the pound.

Both of my doga have been from a shelter and they are awesome! They are a million times more trained and well behaved than my friends' dogs that are pure bred. I have a 15 month old daughter and they are both great with her. I think it's a combination of the breed and working with the dog. My first dog cost us $25 and our second was $50. I think that is amazing considering how smart they are and how much joy they bring to all of my family members. So many dogs are put to sleep each year, I am all for adopting from a local shelter.
