Those in the medical profession are reminded constantly to be very proactive in teaching people to take measures to protect themselves from sun damage. Latest statistics show that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer! There has been 1800% increase in malignant melanoma since 1930. What do you do to protect yourself from malignant melanoma and other sun damage?

I am very fair skinned and need only be out in the sun for 5 minutes or less to start burning. I always use sunscreen and actually try to stay in the shade as much as possible and I always wear a hat or bandana to cover my naked head. During the extreme heat of our summers I wear an asbestos suit and if I want a little more mobility I have a lightweit beekeepers suit that I wear from time to time.

I had a beekeepers suit, but found it to be much too cumbersome. I now go to the garage where hubby painstakingly paints me with a thick coat of varnish.

Hello, crazynurse, the sunlight is really very stromg in Australia because of the depletion of ozone layer in Oceania,we have to protect ourself from exposing to too much sunlight or our skin will be damaged by ultra violet light. We have to wear sunglasses and cap to screen out the sunlight directly,if possible we have to wear protective clothes, more importantly,we need to put enough sunscreen lotion on our skin and reapply when need.

I'm glad you happened to mention wearing sunglasses. So many people have become aware of the dangers of melanoma to their skin, but neglect their eyes! Good for you to wear sunglasses!

I don't do anything. I hate sun cream and only wear it when I have to show parts (such as being to hot) so I wear a t-shirt. Otherwise I cover up and keep myself away from the sun. ~Joey

In Singapore, we don't have 4 seasons. So we don't do anything different during summer.. The sun is ok around here, hot yes, but we don't need to do anything special..

Funny that you asked. Every year I learn from such a big mistake and then every year I turn right around and do it all over again. I NEVER out anything on. I dont know why...I feel like oh I wont burn and then I get burned 2nd degree and ALWAYS have to go to the docters and get special treatment. Its really stupid of me to do, Yes I know. But it usually happens when I eother am swimming in the lake or I fall asleep in the sun.

I know I don't do enough, I live in Florida and I love to have a good tan all of the time. My mom puts on spf 30 on her face everyday and she tries to get me to do it, but you have to die of something!

Because I enjoy driving, and my wife doesn't as much, she bought me a pair of Fitovers. Fitovers, for those of you that don't know, are sunglasses that you can wear over the eyeglasses that you normally wear. Ask your eyecare professional about getting a pair for every member of your family that wears eyeglasses. The nice thing about Fitovers is that even when your prescription needs to be changed, you don't ned to change your Fitovers, because they are not prescription. We wear ours whenever we are outside. Macular Degeneration is nothing to mess with, you might as well be blind in regards to doing any driving. We both use sunscreen when we go to the lake in the summer. We should probably use it anytime we intend to be outdoors for any length of time in the summer. We take anti-oxidant vitamins like C and E, to protect us from the inside out. This has been shown to be effective. My wife even puts sunscreen on the top of my head for protection. Does anyone else have any different suggestions for the rest of us?

I have melanoma on both sides of my family, so I am very sensitive to that! I protect myself with sunscreen and I watch all my moles all the time. I have had a skin cancer on my back, but it was not melanoma, thank God!

Summer to realize what the heat is. No one wonder why this happens more and more. coz Global warming. the most global issue for environment. Now to relax in summer with heat you need AC. or you can have your trip to any beaches. sure you will enjoy that. but for your house you can just do plantation. it will keep your house environment very cool. so my opineon is that you should go with plantation.

Hi friends,I'm new to mylot.I'm interested in responding to your query. In Summer:- 1. Wear light colored, cotton clothes as synthetic material absorbs more UV. 2. Drink plenty of fresh water & eat fresh fruits as both provides antioxidants. 3. Use good quality sunscreen lotions. 4. Wear sunglasses that are certified as UV protective. 5. Avoid sun exposure from 10a.m to 3p.m. 6. Drink black tea as tannin is astringent & has got soothing properties.

I found that staying in side of the house and away from the sun is the best way to protect myself. Other than that, I do like to go outside and catch some rays from time to time.

Skin care - Apply skin care before going to the sun and cover whole body from the sun. One should take umbrella before going.
Yes it is very necessary toprotect oneself because ultravoilet rays are very harmful for the skin. One should go outside by applying sunscreen. I always apply suncreen in the whole body and cover my hairs and face from sking. Whenever i reach anywhere from outside I used to put ice on my face to give water retension to the skin. One should apply raddish or cucumber juice with lime in the skin for toning. Which is very must.

Hi,crazynurse! In China, now we are in an extremely hot season! If I can,I would like to stay at home and avoid the outside activities. But if I have to go out,I will wear sunglasses and use sunscreen lotion on my skin.Another useful way for me to protect myself is drinking more water in summer days.Sometimes,I will take an unbrella with me in sunny days to protect myself.

Last summer here in my country the media shared some info on how to protect skin during summer, according to them the study shows around 10am-4pm is the time that the heat of sun can damage our skin they reminded all people to avoid going outside if necessary, if not try to bring an umbrella to protect your skin from damage of sun's exposure.
