I am sitting in a corner of the living room at the desktop.

I have begun to think I hallucinate with my nose. I smell things that are not there. Some evenings it is cigarette smoke, so much so that it makes me ill. My first husband is the only person who has smoked in this house since 1985, and he is dead ten years ago. We did not ever have the computer in this corner when he was alive. Some nights I smell pizza sitting in this corner. Tonight I smell glazed donuts. I have not had one in ages, or had one in the house. What gives?

This happens to me every once in a while. I have an incredibly sensitive sense of smell but there are times when it goes completely haywire. Usually happens when my hormones are raging out of control which is often nowdays.
The first time I noticed it was when I walked into the bathroom to wash my hands, picked up my favorite beautifully scented soap, and it smelled exactly like diesel fuel! It was horrible. I carried the bar into the livingroom and asked my husband to smell it and tell me what it smelled like. He said it smelled like flowers. Ok.. so I washed my hands and figured my sniffer was just a bit off for some reason. Sure enough, a couple hours later it smelled fine and lovely to me again.
I mentioned it to my mother and she told me it kind of runs in the family. All the women when they get to middle age their smelling goes haywire occasionally.
My best friend had the same problem when she was pregnant both times. She said everything seemed to smell bad, even her favorite perfume.
I figure it has to be hormonal... in my case anyway. We're around the same age so it could be a possibility for you.

Thanks for the link. I will keep an eye on it. I still am pretty sure that it is the neighbor with the smokes, because I never smelled it until after he moved in and started spending a lot of time smoking outside. The next time I smell it, I will go look out front, no problem. My hubby thinks our other (bachelor) neighbor had ordered pizza one night. It did not linger near so long as the smoke. I have no explanation for the fresh donut smell, other than I think I really want one. With coffee. It will have to be morning.

It most likely is the spirit of him, or someother spirit. It is true, and very real. Don't worry, you are normal. It has happend to me too.

Maybe your ex-husband is visiting you. Does he loves to eat those foods? If yes, I'm sure that's him. :-)

I am more inclined to think that the air currents around here bring everything in to this corner. I have a new neighbor that chain smokes outside in the front of his house. I could believe the pizza, but my first hubby did not like sweets, so not the donut.

Oh ok. so I guess that's it. Maybe it came from neighborhoods. :-)

You know, I've had this happen a lot too. It's one of those things that seem to have no real explanation. Once I smelled wood smoke, which sent me searching all over the house to see if something was on fire. I went outside and took a few breaths of cold fresh air, re-entered the house and walked around and there was no smell. Other times I've smelled fresh bread baking, and stuff like that (foods) and there isn't any reason for it...nobody's cooking, etc. I've often wondered if it's memories reminding us of someone. If you close your eyes and think of an orange, you can see it and recall it's scent. Think of a skunk and you can recall the pungent odor in your mind. Same with most other things that are scents. When I smelled the wood smoke, I was thinking of something that had to do with my Dad at the time. He had a woodstove, and I used to do his chimney sweeping/flue cleaning for him. The bread smell and other food smells I attribute to my Aunt (who used to live in this house and was known for her cooking skills, and especially her baking.) I've often thought that something in my subconscious is reminding me of a person, or time in my life, and smells, as well as picturing something, seems to be deep in our memories and comes to the surface. Anyways, lol, that's my theory on it. Now when I smell bread baking, I look up and say "Cookin' again Aunt Do? Thanks for the memories," and let it go at that.

Thanks for best response:-) I don't know if there is any logical explanation for this kind of thing. I do know that I have had it here and there, but not enough to make me think it was a medical condition that was causing it. I live in a century home, main part was built in 1833, and there are some mighty 'strange' & unexplainable things that happen here. (The odors are just some of them.) I like the thought of it being subconscious happy memories trying to get our attention, because as soon as I have an odor memory, happy memories of my relatives (or something) comes to the surface soon after. I think ephemeral is a good word for that, it fits (thanks, I was trying to remember that word yesterday, lol)

My sense of smell is very poor, wheras my husband can smell everything & anything. You must be like him, hypersenstive to smells.
I don't really know why you can smell things that have not been there for 10 years or so?
I do know that smells can accumulate in carpets for a very long time.
Do you have neighbours very near, who may have pizzas?

Maybe you have some psychic abilities and you have a visitor in the house lol and they are trying to communicate to you. I had a friend once who had this ability too. There were different people who would give off different smells and sometimes she would actually find out who the ghosts or spirits were. It was quite fascinating ans scary really.

Might you be smelling your memory instead?
There are times when I taste or smell things that I think might not be there. But somehow, because of some triggers, I taste or smell them.

Many people will try to say that they are "ghosts". I assure you this has nothing to do with ghosts. Maybe your imagination is bringing those smells: human brain is really powerful. Or, maybe there is someone with those stuff! Is there a window nearby, from which the wind may flow with ease? If so, that might be the case!
Otherwise, just go look for a doctor. He'll explain you what's going on.

I lean this way myself, except for the donuts. I think I was tired and I just really felt like I would like a cup of coffee and a donut. I know I have a neighbor who chain smokes, outside, on one side, and probably would imagine the smell if it was not there.
