Do different torrent softwares give different download speeds?

Till now i know about Bit Torrent, Ares and Limewire Beta. These r torrent supported softwares. Are there any other softwares also, and does choosing a software gives us dwnload speed options or does the speed completely depend on the link of our internet connection.
