Not the perfect parent

No one is the perfect parent, not even the so-called experts. Not even the ones with million dollar book deals and high profile TV shows. LOL we all mess up, most of us mess up daily. But if you can admit to yourself and to your child that you messed up, apologize, and work harder the next time you can be a better parent. So, what are your parenting flaws? we all ahve them, the things we wouldn't admit normally. In what ways are you not a perfect parent? Me, I let them watch too much TV. I know its bad and I know I could do better, but then I feel tired or the heat makes me want to just veg out. And pop, on comes the boob-tube.

I'm a weird mix actually. I tend to spoil my kids too much especially when it comes to candy, toys etc but I am also pretty strict with them which helps keep them in check and not get to acting too spoiled and demanding things like you see a lot of kids do.

I have grown children and always thought I expected too much from them as they were growing up. As a single parent they were given a lot of responsibility but they handled it well. Now they have told me how grateful they are that I expected the things I did, they find it much easier now is what they say. Now we have just had my 18 year old step son move in with us and I find that trying to have expectations such as I did with my own children is far beyond him. It appears that being raised in a home where your contribution is not expected proves to be more of a deficiency than an asset. For that reason what I initially thought of as a flaw proves to be a benefit. Just some food for thought for those that feel as I did.

Bringing up kids that too with perfection i think is next to impossible. I have two kids one daughter & one son.I think what i'm loosing for bringing both of them is patience. I keep teeling them things & they refuse to listen to me, that annoys me.They are not that ill mannered but at times they misbehave also.I'm just waiting for them to grow & understand things.

You know I do the same too and even though I think at times its too much tv, most of the time he is not actually watching it as he has his toys out, he's playing at th same time. There are some really good educational programs on tv nowadays and because my sons english is not very good (fisrt language samoan) he has actually picked up a lot of english words. I do monitor what he watches though because there are some cartoon programs that are just silly like Ed, Eddy and Eddie. There are a few other flaws that I can think of but the main one that comes to mind is how impatient I am at times. I expect things to be done as soon as they are said and when my son doesn' listen, then it irritates me and if I have had to tell him again more than twice then I end up yelling. I have told my son to keep telling me "mom your yelling again" or "why are you getting angry" and it helps me to refocus and calm down. I know it sounds silly but it does work when he says those things to me. Just the other day my hubby said that he's notice how calm I am with my son and how patient I'm becoming so I suppose that is a good thing.

Mine is buying too much without regard to whether they need it, appreciate it, or if their behavior merits getting a new toy. When I had my first, I was very young. I heard so many people tell me that I wouldn't be able to provide for my child, that over-indulging was how I responded to that. I'm also really bad with sticking to the limits I give them. I want to be able to say; if you do X, then Y will happen & stick to it. But either because it's easier or because I am busy with something else, I'll give into whatever I said they couldn't do or not follow through with whatever consequence I stated originally. Great question by the way :)

I let my kids stay up as late as they want on the weekends. I know this messes up their schedules, but I work midnight shift and need sleep in the day. I hope that by staying up later, I can get a few un-interupted winks in the am..LOL I try not to be too strict with my kids either. I have good boys, although sometimes unruly, and I know if I would have started being stricter at a younger age, I wouldn't have some of the problems I occassionally face. But I figure, I am tired, I pick and choose my battles over what is important. I am not running a boot camp.

Im ther first to admit what I do wrong is I spoil my daughter with whatever she wants..I know I shouldnt do that because when she gets older she is going to expect to get everything handed to her BUT shes an only child and If I have the money why should it be a problem. Shes not a spoiled brat she doesnt cry on the rare ocassions that I do tell her she cant get something, she is well behaved. I agree there is no such thing as the "perfect" parent no matter ho whard you try your going to mess up sometimes..its okay to do that, were human we make mistakes and as long as we can learn from them then we'll be okay!
