Cellphones: Prepaid Cellphones or Subscribe to Cellphone Providers

There are a lot of cellphone providers that have come out with their line of prepaid cellphones and there are also new players providing cellphone service on one year or two-year contracts to subscribers. I'm really at a loss as to which one is better -- the prepaid cellphone or the subscription one with a contract. Any advice or input will be most welcome. Pros and cons of one or both will be a good help. Also, which cellphone provider is better, there are a lot of providers out there like AT&T/Cingular, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint, Nextel and Alltel, but which one is really better, costwise, servicewise, etc.?

I have tried both types of cell phones. My preference is the prepaid cell phone, as I'm only paying for minutes I have used and no monthly fee. The difference is now I'm paying $15.00 every three months and had been paying $29.95 a month. This has been a big savings, as I have had a prepaid phone for a year.
I had AT/T, which gave me good service, but was tired of paying for minutes I didn't need and had no plans of using my phone more often.
Now I have Virgin Mobile, which has complete coverage in my area. The problem with this choice is its not available everywhere. There is no reason to get a cell phone, if you can't make and receive calls.

How did you manage just paying $15 every 3 months? My friend has a cingular to go phone and she pays $15 every month coz her minutes are only good for 30 days.

I get a discount for paying my bill with my credit card or it would be $20.00 for 3 months. Visit the Virgin Mobile Web Site to learn more about their products. Its not for everyone, but has been working for me and my daughter. My daughter is a college student and her bill is the same as mine. It requires paying close attention to the number of minutes used to keep your bill low like our bills.

Thanks fishmomma. I'll check on virgin mobile to see if it would work for me.
