Could you recommend a child-appropriate book that discusses reincarnation?
We recently lost our pet snake. This is the first death my 5 year old has experienced and he's having a hard time grasping the process. Being that we live in a predominately Christian area, he's heard concepts like "going to heaven" many times. I'm comfortable with him hearing those concepts, and for now I'd just let him go with that and spend more time when he's a bit older explaining my beliefs; but he's not grasping that idea well either. He became extremely distraught that if he "went to heaven" his pretend sister (stuffed animal) wouldn't be able to go with him, since he does understand that she's not alive in the first place. Understand, he came up with that concern all on his own, I certainly didn't tell him his stuffed animal couldn't go to heaven. He was very bothered by the idea that you stay in heaven forever and wait around for the people you care about to die & show up. Which in a nutshell is how several relatives explained heaven to him.
It's so hard to find pagan books geared for children on any subject, I wonder if one like this even exists yet. But I'd like to find something that in any way explains life being circular in nature, and in some way supports that we come back in any form.

Wow .. when I was looking through my book list it dawned on me that there aren't many books about this subject for Pagan's or kids. The wheels are turning .. I may have to get on the ball and pen a few!
Here are some suggestions ...
"Celebrating Life: Rites of Passage for All Ages", by Tzipora Klein.
Rituals and folklore that honor the milestones in life.
"All I See is Part Of Me", by Chara M. Curtis and Cynthia Aldrich.
Illumination Arts: 1994. ISBN 0-935699-07-4. Hardcover $15.95.
Dover Publication has a lot of Pagan related books - both activity and coloring books. These are inexpensive and can be ordered from their website. You may also want to check with Bizziebod (another mylot member) to see if she has an recommendations.
You can get to her page through this link:

Best of luck ...

www.darkmoonlodge.co.uk
www.wiccawitchcraft.net
www.wicca.timerift.net
www.crypt.eldritchs.com
these are just a few that i have in my firefox bookmarks and they help me out on some questions that i may have.i like to try to think that you can still learn through the internet instead of buying books all the time.that takes up alot of money in the long run!but i hope these help you in some way of learning the craft for your child and hope that he gets to feeling better about his pet snake.i use to own one long time ago and loved him so i know that the pet snake can be loveable!they are interesting and cute!

I think there are children's books on reincarnation based upon Edgar Cayce -- check online: Association for Research and Enlightenment (The Edgar Cayce Foundation). There's also books by Hare Krishna groups for children regarding reincarnation.

I believe reincarnation is a very sensitive subject and it is better at the moment to let your son stay with the concept of people going to heaven. You can slowly tell him that they are not going to stay there forever but will soon be back in another form. You can start by showing how water when boiled becomes vapour and then when it recools becomes water again. Tell him its something like that. It is all only for a specific time and not eternal. That will ease him a bit. You can tell him that his pretend sister will be available to play with in heaven if he wants it. There's nothing to worry about. Or better still you can buy him another pet and say his pet snake is back in another form... :)
