I thought I would start a new discussion on Children with Selective Mutism. I am a mother of a 6 year old daughter who is currently starting treatment for this disorder. I know it is a lonely road and we hurt so much for our mute children! But together, we can help to support eachother!

Thanks for your response. Its a pretty rare disorder from what I have been told so I am not sure how many people on here will know what it is. I appreciate your sending a bit of support though. That was very sweet!
Thanks

I have taught a little boy aged 5 that had selective mutism. He was a very shy child and he didn't speak to me for most of the school year. I had little idea of his reading skills apart from discussing this with his mother. I hadn't heard him ever speak then one day he did this outside the classroom. I was amazed to hear him talk to his mother. Before this he had only talked at home. A couple of months later he began taking a bit to me his teacher. When he went into the next school year he wouldn't talk to the teacher but he did talk to the children. So I found that his confidence did grow. Good luck with your daughters treatment. I hope that it really helps.

I have just found your discussion. I have an 8 year old son with selective mutism. You are right it is a lonely road. My son has recently started treatment and is showing some improvement.
How is your daughter doing?
I have been told many times that selective mutism is very rare, so it would be great to have someone to talk to who is going through a similar experience.
