The homeless spend their entire day in the library and are permitted to do so, as long as they do not bother others. There are a regular group who have been going there for years and you get to know their ways and habits. Some of them have been wondering through life like this for years (with mental afflections) and I am wondering are the public libraries in your city the same?

This is gifted resource for the City of Chicago. People of all walks of life utiized the service. I believe that the "homeless" are exposed to information, that would not other wise be available to them and they love it. I remember when the service first started back in the late nineties and how everyone was learning and growing and now becomeing quite proficient.

Most of the homeless that I see are not in the Libraries, but in the Tunnels and on the streets. 'Course that's where they may be able to get some change, etc...

All homeless people are not the same. People are homeless for different reasons. Some have withdrawn from so-called average society and reside in this sub-culture. For some it is just a resting place before picking up and moving back into a "normal" lifestyle.

When I lived in Orlando,Florida a few years ago, their main public library was quite large and homeless people spent lots of time there. Some read, some spent time at computers. I feel that computers can provide a wealth of information to those who are trying to find a way to better their lives. They most likely have no access to this information otherwise. Where I live now is so small that my PERSONAL library seems to have a better selection of books than the PUBLIC one, LOL and there are no public access computers. But the homeless population here is zero, so I guess it doesn't apply.

How is that small town living? Must be a culture shock from Orlando to a small town.

Hey SQ,
Our library is like that too except for there is an hour limit if others are waiting to use the computers.Same thing w/ homeless ppl too they hang out at the library until closing time mostly in the newspaper & magazine section of the library. It doesn't bother me though & they have never bothered me.

Our library has a two hour limit and they don't really bother anyone. I am happy to see them inside and safe.
