Who still has panelling in their homes?!?!

yack! - Paneling is so done with! Why do people still think it will look good in their homes!?! Especially if the home was built in the 19th century?!

I HATE panelling! What were folks of the 70s thinking??!!!I am moving in a few days to a new home we bought. It is huge and has over 2500 square feet and for whatever reason (!), they took out the original woodwork and put in panneling! And I'm talking they put it in WITHIN the past DECADE! Why won't people let it go!??!

I don't like it if it is overdone or cheap but thehouse that my husband and I are buying has one small wall paneled in realy hardwood and varnished and I think it looks nice, certainly wouldn't want it on all the walls but just the one wall behind the woods stove, I think, give the house a warm feeling. However if it was crappy wood-llok wall board I would take it out.

True, if it is QUALITY wood and serves to accent a wall or wood stove, as you mention, THAT I can live with. Good point. And congrats on your new home! Oh, funny thing since you mentioned wood stoves. We cannot use the one that's here until we have it sandblasted. The previous owners painted over it with REGULAR paint. Yeah. Crazy. And, crazier even? It's all hooked up and ready to go. Can someone say "fire hazard" or "smoke inhalation"? LOL

My woodstove, with wood panelling behind it. - Here you can see my woodstove in my new house, it is currently not far enough from the wall and the pipe is upside down, but we are going to fic it before we run it.
Sounds liek the same situation with ours. It currently doesn't have enough clearance (we can turn it and then it will) and the pipe going up from the store to the chimney is put on upside down so the cresode can drip out. HEre is a picture of the woodstove and the wood panelling in my new house. And THANKS! we are so excited we can't wait to move, we take possession this Friday.

Oh! See? Now that paneling is not that bad. It's looks like a good quality real wood. Although it would make the room even smaller, I, myself, would prefer a darker stain is all. Your stove is COOL! We ought to swap photos back and forth as we go along. Well, yeah, I'll probably put them on Flickr anyway. YAY! I'm so excited for you!

LOL! Thank you and GOOD FOR YOU! Sad thing is, we had to push our closing date back. We're actually in the house now but are paying rent this first month until we get our contract better fitted. So, with that said, we have to look at it still! :( *sobbing uncontrollably*!

I only have one wall of wood paneling...in my living room. The bedrooms and hallway are all wood paneling. The bathroom is designed paneling (blue flowers as if that helps lol) and the kitchen/dining room is tan designed paneling on one side and wood paneling on the other! It was built in 1983-4 I'm moving soon too and I really hope there won't be a single piece of cheap wood paneling anywhere in the new place. My parents have a lot of paneling in their house though and for the most part it actually looks really nice. They put a higher quality wall papered paneling up on most of the walls. That actually looks good since it's an older home and probably would have originally had patterned wallpaper. They tried really hard to save the original wainscot but it didn't seem possible without spending a lot more money than they had for renovations. Instead they covered it with the nicer kind of wood paneling. It's alright but I'd rather have marred real would than perfect fake wood. The kitchen and bathrooms are done in a tiled paneling. I'm undecided about it. I think it does look nice but it wouldn't have been MY choice. All of the work they've done has been since 1993 by the way. I guess I'm biased against paneling anyway since my "dream house" would be an old farm house with all its beat up, imperfect wood and plaster.

Oh, I hear you on that last statement. We're finally in the house I posted about and the upstairs has all original plaster and of course, it's in really excellent shape. It's back from a time where craftsmanship mattered! I almost don't want to sand the floors when we refinish them just because I love all the old scratches and imperfections too. One SAD thing we have discovered in our new house: Every neighbor we have invited over to take a look has mentioned where the ORIGINAL OPEN STAIRCASE USED TO BE. ARGH! They TOOK IT OUT?!?!? But we have HIGH HOPES because here in this small town, all the houses lined down our street were made with the same layout and by the same builders and we have heard rumors that someone around this neighborhood took out THEIR OPEN STAIRCASE as well BUT that they still have it sitting in their basement. You have best believe I am investigating to find out exactly who these neighbors are! And, don't give up on your dream house! It's out there I promise! I searched and searched HUNDREDS of homes over the past year and then, "Here she was waiting for me and my fiancee" :p And guess what? We got it for $25,000. Can you believe that?! It even has a new a/c unit and heat pump! This place is a DREAM COME TRUE for us. Yours will come true too!

Are you in your newplace and starting the restoration? I have to tell you, I didn't have to deal with panelling. Thank god, that stuff is hideous. Were they putting it on top of insulation? That is the only reason I can see for ripping out an original wall and covering it with that stuff? ANyhow, in our house, which is over 100 years old, they painted everytihng with a thick oil based paint. Over the years I have stripped it all back, but it has been some job. Layers, and layers of paint in all different colours. It makes you wonder what people are thinking, to cover beautiful old wood, but I guess fashions change. But not with panelling, in the last 10 years. LOL!

LOL Perfect adjective, hideous! Funny funny FUNNY thing is: my fiancee's older brother was the first one to come and take a gander at our new place once we moved in. Mind you, he is the 40 year old bachelor who lives for hunting and fishing but he could not stop raving about how much he LOVED the paneling! He'd point out one of these ugly a*s walls claiming how gorgeous his 8 deer racks would look lined down this wall or that one. *GAG* Yes, people are NUTS. THanks for the great response woodpigeon!

When we were looking to buy a house last year almost every house we looked at had paneling. I didn't realize how many people actually used paneling. Anyway my fiancee and I finally picked a house that had no paneling what so ever. Neither of use care for paneling. Some people like paneling is probably one of the reasons why they put it in there home. Another reason could be that they did the home improvement themselves and they might not know how to drywall or something.

Are houses are made of concrete, as we live in the middle of an ocean & have hurricanes to deal with. Most people I know with panelling have ended up with mold and/or mildew between it and the concrete wall. We just tend to paint the concrete...

Oh yeah, in that sort of environment, I can imagine they'd get tons of mold! It's strange how some people wouldn't take measures also to get it done right the FIRST time. I watch a lot of DYI and HGTV and it just stuns me to no end the choices that people make!

Panelling is ugly, I cannot tell the last time I saw a home with panelling. I guess you guys will have to rip out and put something else more appealing.

lol We definitely don't have any in our house, but I know that when my parents first moved in here, there was a ton of it and my parents couldn't stand it. I think that was one of the first things they changed as soon as they bought the house. They couldn't wait to get rid of it all, lol. My sister and brother in law recently bought a house and it actually had paneling in the living room still, but the previous owners had painted over it before selling the house. It does help, but they still can't wait to get rid of it, lol.

Lol. I lived in an apartment complex that still had paneling up. It was horrendous... Our living room had paneling that went half way up the wall.. it also stopped randomly at a point on the wall so it didn't even go all the way across. It was so horrible.... Some of the rooms had what looked like chunks of tree on the wall, not exactly paneling, but it looked SO UGLY and made the whole place dark and uninviting. Luckily I no longer live in that complex :)
