I used to promote self published authors for a living (spent around 75 hours per week doing this until it seriously burned me out and I had to stop). Here's the most common mistakes authors really need to pay attention to if they want their books to succeed:
(1) research as much as you possibly can about the business of self publishing - this WILL be a full time job if you don't hire someone to promote your work for you
(2) edit your work thoroughly, then have someone else do the editing - the work must be near perfect if you want to see sales, good reviews and good market standing
(3) Yes, you DO need an ISBN # if you want to see your book on store shelves and stocked by Internet stores such as Amazon -- most stores will NOT carry books from lulu.com or any other POD because can't return them when they don't sell
(4) It's VERY important to have your marketing plan in place BEFORE your book goes to press - I've written about this all over the web because I've been SO surprised at how many authors think the books will sell without any work on their part
There are a lot of excellent resources out there that will help you make your self publishing goals a success:
(1) Peter Bowerman's The Well-Fed Self-Publisher (http://www.wellfedwriter.com)
(2) Anything by Dan Poynter!
(3) http://www.selfpublishedauthors.com
(4) Publicize Your Book by Jaqueline Deval
(5) Book Marketing From A-Z by Fran Silverman
The best advice I can give you from the very beginning is understand the business in and out before you get started so you can have a solid foundation for success beneath you.

Thanks for the good information. I have been considering self publishing a book I am working on. This will be helpful.
I do have one question. How does someone go about getting an ISBN#?
Thanks!

You're very welcome! Here's the link you'll need:
http://www.isbn.org/standards/home/isbn/us/
There's a link on there that will guide you through the application process and talk about the pricing. You have to buy a block of ten ISBN #'s because this system was originally developed for publishers carrying numerous titles, but not self publishers who typically have one softcover and one hardback title. So, there's really no way to get around that.
