My son is two and a half and is obssessed with lights and fans. He can't walk by any room without begging for you to turn it on or off. And If i don't comply with hisrequest he throws himself on th floor and bawls. The tears flow. My hubby has IED (intermittant Explosive Disorder) BiPolar, and OC. Could my son have thos things? At what age do they diagnose these things?

It could be possible your son has one of these conditions or maybe it is something else (or heck, maybe it's nothing at all!) My autistic son (who will be 10 years old this month) is into fans and lights. He's also into sprinklers and water. He has loved these things since he was about 2 years old. I know with autism they have ways to diagnose it at a very early age. I'm not sure about these other conditions. Hopefully you can get help from others on here. Good luck!

Hey hun, he might be showing signs, but then again, he might not. My brother was born without a conscience, he did things like cut the tip off my other brothers finger and what not and my parents were actually scared of him for quite some time, but no one would take him in to give him an analysis until he was beginning his teens. I also have an anxiety disorder and clinical depression, i've had it since before i can remember, but then again, also, the doctors wouldn't assess me and help me out until i was about 11 years old. I'm not sure how they do it there in the states, but most cases here in Canada have to wait until the child is about puberty age, or as they've said to my parents 'until, or unless he kills someone.' Maybe it's a good idea to try getting him into other things, and reading up about the disorders in child format to see if there's maybe a way that you can pull him out of it. I know a little boy who was like 3ish and he had OCD, at 3 he was washing his hands till they blead hundreds of times a day, due to physical harm they had him analyzed and tried psychologists, they still won't give him anything for it, he's only about 6, but it's gotten much much better. good luck hun...

No one in my family has the disorders you've mentioned, but I think 2 1/2 sounds about right for young children to become fascinated with something. Our youngest is almost 20 years old, so it's been awhile since our children were young, but from what I remember they had phases they went through where they were fascinated with different things. That's fine to turn on lights and fans some, but I wouldn't do it for him every time. If he throws a fit because you won't do it, then he throws a fit?! He'll get over it! You don't want to cater to his every wish, that only ends up with you having a spoiled child. The world will not end because he's having a tantrum. It may go a long way towards teaching him he can't always get his way, too? On diagnosing things, I would discuss that with your pediatrician.

I think at least OCD and bipolar have some genetic connection, so it's worth keeping an eye on those as he gets older, but it's completely normal for a 2yo to do what you describe.
