How to train them naturally without the use of Bark Collars.

I have a yappy Shih_Tzu whom I love to bits. The thoughts of putting any sort of Collar on her to stop her barking, well seems too mean. I know some people use them and swear by them for training, but I couldn't do that. Neither could I use the Citronella ones. So I was wondering if anyone has advice on a natural way to stop the barking. She is fine if I am in the room. All I have to say is her name and she will stop. However, there is a field of cows next to my home and my dog will sit in the window for hours on end. So...blocking this window should fix the problem right? WRONG. Then she goes to the front door and barks and barks and barks at the door. I might add too..she is MUCH quicker then I am and if she happens to get out the door when the kids open it..out she goes..down the lane, under the electric fence and torments these cows just barking and barking at them! Help...my Shih_Tzu is a cow tormenter!

First off, if your dog is bothering livestock, this is a training emergency. Depending on where you live, the neighbor may be legally permitted to shoot your dog or have animal control seize it. Pico has an entry in her blog talking about how we trained her not to bark - http://misspico.wordpress.com/2007/05/15/barking-and-the-less-fun-not-barking/ However, you really need to train your dog to leave the cows alone. The best thing to do is to start with her as far away from the cows as you need to be to keep her attention and practice praising her for focusing on you, not the cows. Keep practicing and moving closing to the cows until she learns to ignore the cows. Good luck! Julie and Pico
