How much is too much when it comes to napping?

My three year old loves to take long afternoon naps. Sometimes she sleeps for three hours! I've tried waking her up, only to have her turn into a grumpy preschooler.
How long do you let your little kids sleep in the afternoon? Is there a right amount of time? Do you have any suggestions on how I can gently ease her from nap time to awake time, without sending her into fits of tears?
Any advice you have would be much appreciated.

I wish my two year old son would have a longer nap in the afternoon. Currently ,he sleeps about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. He is a light sleep sleeper and tends to wake up at the slightest sound. How long a child naps will also differ, with some toddlers only needing an hour to rejuvenate and others continuing to snooze for up to three hours until they're four or five. Both are completely normal.

Consider yourself lucky she takes a long nap, it leaves enough time for you to nap as well or clean or chat or read. My baby will nap for about 40 minutes maximum though out the day. Her sleep times are pretty weird, 12 in the night to 10 the next day and just that small nap during the day. There is actually no standard nap or sleep time. I think you shouldn't disturb her sleep, she will get irritable.

If she's still sleeping good at night then I wouldn't worry too much about her afternoon nap. My two year old can easily sleep 3 to 4 hours in the afternoon too but he still sleeps at his regular time at night (8pm) and he still gets a good 12 hours sleep at night. So, I'm not worried that he likes taking a long afternoon nap.

My preschooler won't nap. Lucky you. Does she end up staying up later at night as a result? You could try putting her down for an hour or an hour and a half and waker her up and get her moving fast. Like a shake it off kind of thing. She might get used to it after a while. Like kind of a sleep training kind of thing. I really think ths is just a growing time and maybe she is just sleeping more than usual. If she has always been like this then I don't know. MAybe she will just grow out of it. I am sorry if this is unhelpful.
