I think most religions have some kind of midwinter celebration, where they celebrate the good things they have.
regardless of religion, Christmas is a magical time, when most people feel much closer to the special things in their lives.
presents and eating too much is all part of it.
the presents aren't so much a materialistic thing for me, as showing those I love how much I appreciate that I've got them. I love giving presents. it's more exciting than getting presents. it makes me feel so warm inside.
food. well it's a dark time of the year. having enough to eat, or even eating to excess makes you feel safe.

Self is the true meaning of x-mas. It has nothing to do with Christ. It exhisted as other forms of pagan holidays long before Christ was born. Dec. 25th was actually the day that was set aside to honor the birth of the pagan god Mithra. God tells us in Deuteronomy 12:29-32, not to worship him as the heathen's worshiped their gods, and not to observe anything that He hasn't told us to. The heathens decorated trees, see Jeremiah 10:1-6. God never tells us to honor his birthday. I hope this has been helpful. Agape.

The true meaning of Christmas, as you said, is to show our gratitude for what God did for us. I think it is also a time to spend time with your family and friends, and like Thanksgiving, realize and be thankful for everything that you have. Even though it's also a time when we get and receive presents, we shouldn't make it all about that. I think people get too caught up in that and forget the true meaning of Christmas, and why we are celebrating that holiday.
