I don't believe you can be one or the other, but both. You can be an independent person but must depend on certain things to get you where you're going. For example you depend on your car to take you places or the city bus, yet you are independent in the fact that you do things or go to places on your own. You depend on a job to make money as an independent person. You depend on people to help you when you need it and so on. So technically you can be both. If you are disabled you have to depend on people, but you can also be an independent person. That's how I see it. I really hope that made sense.
