I have had some experience with this topic with my boss lately. One thing that sometimes caused problems was our cultural differences. Issues that were important to me were simply insignificant to him. He is of an Asian heritage whereas I am American. I have no problem with this, but I noticed how the cultures clashed at times. However, the same problems can arise between two people of the same culture but different backgrounds.
I find the best way to deal with situations with people is to first, be mature about the situation. Act like an adult and tell the other person you want to resolve the issue at hand in an adult and professional manner.
Be sure to have an open mind and LISTEN to the others person's concerns. Don't start thinking about your rebuttals to defend your point of view while the other person is talking. Seek first to really understand, then to be understood.
