School is out and being a wahm I let my son stay up until he falls asleep. So far he hasn't been able to hang past midnight. (He's on his way to first grade) Each morning when he gets up after breakfast I have a one page lesson plan for him with additon, subtraction and the spanish word of the day. Once he is finished he is free for the day. With the execption of his reading. We read one book a day. What are other wahmer's or just parent's in general doing to keep their kids brains from going to mush during the summer?

My son has been out of school a few weeks, but has been out of town for most of it. When he gets back in 2 weeks I have a lesson plan set out for him. I work half days so while I am at work, I am putting him in daycare with his frends. During the afternoon we will do a subject a day just to keep his skills up. When we do reading, we go to the library and pick out books. I usually add in a few things he won't be getting in school - science, art etc - that he enjoys. I try to make it fun by adding in "educational trips" - going to the zoo, chldrens museum, etc - and science projects. I may put him in an afternoon reading program like I did last year. He really enjoyed it and it helpd his reading skills. I have to watch my step though. We did summer work with him last year and he ended up ahead of the other kids.

Sounds like you have this summer learning thing down to a science. I hope to have my son reading a little better by the end of the summer. Right now he knows a lot of words but likes to take the lazy way out and guess the story by looking at the picture. However, he can absolutely suprise me by reading a hard word like "exit" or "medicine" totally out the blue. So I know he can do it, he just has to apply himsleft.

My kids arent out until next week but I, like you, let my two stay up as late as they want during the summer other than a few nights here and there when I'll make them sleep in their rooms and go to bed at a decent time.....During the summer they like to read, they both enjoy educational programing (along with their usual mindless shows LOL), we talk about stuff and so on....They are older than your little guy though (my girl is 12 and my son will be 14 in Oct) so they are pretty good about "learning"...and they're forever curious aobut things too ya know which is good...
