Gnats and other annoying insects

So, most people have at least one bug that urks them. Mine is normally an ant. Spiders and the like aren't that great either, but I'd rather have a roach or spider than an ant bed. My current annoyance however would be gnats. For some reason I have them all over my apartment and no matter how much I clean or swat at them they multiply. How do you get rid of gnats? Any tips on getting rid of other bug annoyances?
