Train traveling in Thailand

Have someone experience of going by train in Thailand?
Me and my wife is planning to stay 4-5 days on Chang and then go by train around somewere up the country.

I hope you had a nice experience going by train. I think is a nice way of travelling, the views etc, but thai trains are usually 1 or 2 hours late! It almost happened everytime I travelled by train :'(
