What to believe?Forgive or Forget

I am engaged and it was love at first sight. My ex boyfriend was a gambler and was very irresponsible. When I broke up with him I told him about all the mistakes that he had done and walked away. Six months down the road he calls and says that he had changed and what he said sounded like he was on the right track. Is it okay to forgive him and be friends or forget him because he might want to me more than friends?
