Oiling the cats with something non toxic, like shortening, then using a flea comb will remove the inactivated fleas, and some or all of the eggs. Same as for lice, as sweetaspie said. I will also put a few drops of tea tree oil and of lavender in the shortening, as it repels fleas. My mom saved bacon drippings and put down the backbones of her cats. She said it was good for their skin and the salt in it killed the fleas.

In the UK we can buy an oil that goes on the back of the neck that protects them for up to a month. Although I only treat my cats about twice a year because I dont wont to put to much on their coat. It keeps them flea free and although I dont like using to much medication on them i think its better than the infestation which can ruin their fur and aggravate the eyes. You can buy shampoos to wash out the majority of fleas if its a really bad infestation but generally cats dont appreciate the bath.

perhaps we will try the oil, too. i presume that oil is also available at the veterinarian's. there is really a need for our pets to be free fromt he infestation of htese parasites as we can also be affected by the presence of these unwanted beings.

I should think the injection is more effective. I know people debate the overall health aspect of these potions, but our cats share our home and Im more concerned about the fleas effecting the family. Nothing is worse than it getting into the furniture and bedding. Im the first to get bitten if they have got what we call a friend.

Melaleuca oil shampoo is GREAT! You can use it on your hair too. It doesn't contain harmful chemicals either. It kills fleas and tics and lice. Wonderful stuff.

I would go to the vet and get the once-a-month flea treatment (Frontline or something similar). It kills the fleas and the eggs as well. The stuff you can buy at the store is not usually as effective. I use Frontline plus for my dog and we haven't had a flea problem at all. For immediate relief, I have heard that bathing the cat using Dawn dishwashing liquid will get rid of the current fleas (however, it will not keep new ones away).

the surest and best solution i know is by bringing it to the vet. they now have these injectables which is good for a few months. then when we see the fleas again, we will have another injection. it saves so much headaches about having to cope with the fleas.

My favorite thing for fleas is called capstar tablets. You have to buy them from your vet, or you can order them online. They are great.

I like Revolution. I pick that up at my vet's office and it works rather well. I highly recommend it.
