I would recommend an index fund over a mutual fund. An index fund simply will buy an equal sample of the entire market. You will do no better or worse than the market itself. Mutual funds rarely outperform the market. There are many reasons why they don't. The main reason being the fees and costs associated. After accounting for these fees they almost never outperform the market.
