will making english the primary medium of instruction improve our capabilities of competing in the global market? are Filipino students of public schools ready to speak English during their entire stay in school?what do staunch nationalists think about this? what do you think?

yes, and most countries ARE catching up on us when it comes to english-speaking abilities, so it would make sense for us to imporove on this by teaching our children English through using it as the medium of instruction in primary public schools. ;)

I am a nationalist too but often to changes in my beliefs.I think it is better for us to use Pilipino as the medium of instructions in our schools.Look at Japan,China and South Korea to name a few, they are industrialized countries, although they are not good speakers and writers of the english language. If we use Pilipino, the child will learn faster because that is his tounge naturally compared to english which is not our natural language.Let us leave the english language to people who have the ability to learn and speak english easily. For people who find the english language hard to learn, they can take up engineering or other courses not required to master the english language. That way we will produce more engineers and other proffessionals that will boost our industrialization process to be a first class country in the future.

I agree with you, to become a first-world nation, all we need is to focus on the whole education system. Proficiency in english gives us an edge, but what will happen if the english speaking filipino knows only clerical and domestic jobs?

yes! i think that english should be the primary medium in public schools. take for example the private schools, they use english and it shows a great result in the performance of the students. the government need not worry if the kids in public schools wouldn't be able to practive the national dialect, they are able to practice it at home. plus, we filipinos need to be good in english so that we can communicate better, find better jobs (eg. call centers?!, lol..), so that at least we can help ourselves and our familes. =D

i agree with you. hehe some people don't want that though. their fears are not unfounded, btu i'm sure that we can find a solution when it comes to us being more skilled at using english while at the same time using Filipino as well.

As I am not from the Philippines I am not really qualified to answer your questions, but I will say something anyways. I think it would be really sad if your own language is not used in schools anymore. There are a lot of culture and sense of belonging in using your national language. Important things from your culture will not be accurately described if english becomes the most used language. I really hope there is a way of competing globally and use your own language.

Yes, English should be the primary medium of instructions. Capability to speak in English is one of our advantage as Filipino workforce and we should hold on to that advantage. Many nationalities are trying hard to learn English to make them competitive so why should we regress?

that's why i feel sad to those who oppose on this wonderful plan in uplifting the public school's educational standards. they should be grabbing the opportunity of this chance that even if these kids are just studying in these public schools, they will have the opportunity to learn the language in an early age... which obviously, can be used later on when they are already working. or maybe, teachers these days aren't that capable to speak the languge, too?... anne

while it is true that by training the students of today to improve their communication skills particularly in english they become competitive, it is important that such training should be coupled with other trainings and self-development programs too. besides, one may be deployed into the labor market having only with him good communication skills but not the other necessary skills he/she needs to hurdle his/her daily activities; thus, making his communication skills useless. one of the reasons why filipinos are one of the top choices of foreign employers is because of our good command of the english language. however, in case you haven't noticed, most of our asian neighbors are slowly catching up and that means that we have more competitors in the job market. therefore, it is important that we start training our students in the elementary level so that they will get used to it as they reach high school and even college. as a college professor, i have noticed that there really is a problem in the communication skills of our students (most of them are from public schools in the provinces). it's not only seen in how they speak... not only in how they write... but also through their comprehension of things like instructions given to them or any reading material that you give them. maybe it's about time that we really seriously implement the use of english as the medium of instruction here in our country.

i had my gradeschool years in a public school. and we were always forced to speak english when inside the campus. and because of that, we were trained to be confident in speaking english even when we were still kids. we were trained on how to use correct grammar and correct spelling in any circumtance. and now that we're all grown up, having our own careers in life, our teachers back then are so proud of us. looking back, we feel so pressured but now, we feel so thankful for those very good days when we were trained well in english. though we just had been to public schools, now, we get good jobs. some even have good positions in call center indistries... all because we started loving the english language even when we were kids. i just hope that the students today will understand that this isn't bad at all. learning english and having it as the primary medium of instruction in schools will benefit themselves foremost. people just don't like to be trained. so, instead of being thankful for this wonderful program, they find faults and flaws on this matter... anne

i think English been a medium of communication widely accepted would be a good bet to be taught in many nations. Take for example here in Nigeria, English is like our own official language and the only means of communication if you want to be recognized as a literate. It would make you more acceptable to the global market as well as enhance your job outlook skill.

I believe that taking away one's native language is a way to disempower. Why should you be required to use English if it is not the native language of your country? This is what Europeans did to the American Indians. They forced the Native children out of their families and into boarding schools where they were not permitted to use their native language. It eroded their culture, their spirituality, their heritage and made them more dependent on the Europeans. Keep your native language as your primary language and learn English if you want. Keep your culture and your heritage intact.

You are right. That is the strategy used by the Americans when they invaded the Philippines. After destroying the armed groups that opposed their invasion through arms, they sent military-teachers (the Thomasites)to teach the Filipinos in the guise of educating them. The real intention of these Thomasites is to modify the mind of the filipino. The strategy of the Americans is so effective that until now, many Filipinos were still stuck to the colonial mentality

I think people are confused about using english as a medium, nationalism doesnt mean you should only speak the filipino laguage, you should support and promote your culture above all else, So tell me how can a person express his nationalism if he doesnt know how to say it to foreigners and an example of extreme nationalism is Dr. Jose Rizal our own national hero, he learned not only one foreign laguage but 7 or more but this didnt hinder his love for his country, I think people who say that speaking in english is against nationalism are people who are ignorant and doesnt appreaciate the benefits of using the universal laguage. Really how can you be able to declare onto the world that you are a filipino if you cannot express yourself right? I am very disappointed on the level of teaching a lot of public school highschool students are recieving. My brother a 4rth year highschool student doesnt even know how to make a complete english sentence let alone speak it. I am not ashamed of him actually he is quite bring, I am not in denial actually I am now teaching him as a suppliment and he is learning fast. If that is the case I can and observe that English teachers in public schools are not doing their jobs right. I am an english teacher for a private school I do not mean to insult my public school colleagues but really the evidence is so obvbious. We must atleast increase our efforts in teaching the next generation the universal laguage, now that the world is becoming global english is essential to find a competitive job one day.

Yes, it will improve an develop the young mind. If the school will have that strict rule then why not, students will just go with the flow and i think it's best practice. ;)

I think it's time for all developing countries to make English as the primary medium of instruction. Today, there is lot of competition and one needs to be trained and education to become acceptable internationally.

Well, with respect to the Philippine schools, you will have to tell me. English cannot hurt in the global market, but I don't know how much that is a sacrifice or a compromose for your people. In the U.S, English is THE language and it is key. There are those that try to force our schools to also teach in spanish - those people are flat out wrong. Do have a wonderful day.

whatever they say, it should be a must for all schools to have instructions in english because that is the only way filipinos to learn the language and besides , we use to be very fluent with the english language but sadly to note that most of our younger generations are loosing it.
