i heard that china is running short of names!! billions of ppl only have 100 surnames and so there are thousands of ppl having the same name. wang, lin, yu... all are so common that there is an increasing amount of identity crises. the govt. is apparently trying to solve this by adding the father's and mother's surnames together...its confusing... what about you? how important is your surname, are you aware of its origin? do you keep it in official documents or your first name works fine? now, to all concerned: are you keeping your ex-husband's surname still after seperation?

It's little funny with me Mimpi. I am a man of 5'3", but my name in full is lengthier than that.:-) My name in full comes as Sreevasudeva Bhattathiri. Bhattathiri is my surname and it hints my Malayali brahmanical ancestry here in Kerala. In words and deeds, I am not brahmanical, though. Even not religious too.:-)

i would like to have it in full sreevasu. would you mind? on a serious note, you need not be a brahmin to have your values and judgement in the full running and i know you have yours right. thanx.

I won't mind Mimpi, but it not that easy to call me in full. :-) I used to fight for my brahmanism with non-brahmins but I will fight for my non-brahmanism with brahmins.. just for fun. But for sure, I hate these caste classifications.

Good to see such a nice discussion. Now, time to reply: Ans 1: My surname is very important for me as it reflects my caste. Ans 2: I am "Afgaani Pathaan" by caste, I hope it itself speaks about its origin. Ans 3: Yes, I keep it in all official documents. Ans 4: Your last question is not applicable on me..

I use my complete name and try to do so on most of the occasions. My surname is 'Sethi'. Incidently, at my workplace I am called by my surname, my near and dear ones and my friends calls me by my first name. Though I love my surname..yet I feel more happy when someone calls me by my first name (when you are called by your first name...it gives you a feeling of closeness). My first name is more dear to me than my surname (but in office I have adjusted myself with my surname....I cannot ask or request everyone to call me by my first name). Perhaps, it becomes a practice in the offices to call someone by his/her surname. Nonetheless a Very Good Discussion! dpk Have a Nice Day!

yes deepak, in professional places the surname (or by initials) is more popular and in our country specially for men. women enjoy a priviledge of being called by the first names and indeed, as you have mentioned, it feels good. you are a punjabi, right? my anunt (mamiji) is a punjabi as well. have a nice day.

I know this sounds dumb but maybe they will have to start putting numbers to the different family names and then all relivitives will be associated with that group of numbers. Is that dumb or a fairly good idea? What do you think?
@mimpi1911 (25464)

no, i feel, that's fairly good idea!! they can introduce something like social security code which is exclusive for one person only. what about you, how often do you use your surname, coffeeanyone?

Well mimpi I am married and took my husbands surname which is Moir. In all important documents you have to have your full name on it, first middle and last. When I got married I actually kept my own surname as well but never use it anymore. So my full name would be Tammy Lynn Swain-Moir. Alot of people do this here to keep their family names going. I don't actually know the origin of my last name but might be fun to find out. Before I got married to the person I am married to now I was living with someone else and I had taken his last name as well and when we split up I changed my name back to what it was before.

hi tammy, personally, i think, its important to keep the original surname and then you might or might not keep your partners'. For later on, if someone has to change the surname its a hassle. i have been facing a lot of problem recently. all my documents carry my ex-husband's surname and now i want to change it. thanx for sharing. PS: you have a classy last name.

Thanks. it wasn't a big deal with me I had really only changed my drivers license and I just changed it back when it was time to renew it (where my live in was concerned anyway.) Now I would just drop my hubby's name if we got a divorce and change my drivers license again when I renewed it, but I would have to pay for a legal name change for the government documents like my health card and income tax etc...

My surname is "SINGH" but I never use it bcz there is no surname in my highschool marksheet and certificate. So now I cann't use it bcz it would not be considered legal and I really don't want to use it noe bcz now I am quite happy with my presenr name and don't want any alteration in it.

my surname is kolarkar and i use it in every document. i belong to maharashtra state in india, where you can find the widest variety of surnames...... so if there is shortage of surnames in china and they need it badly, chinese people are most welcome to borrow from maharashtra india.

I am diorced from my first husband and still not yet oofficlaly married to my new one. So I still legally carry my ex husband's surname. I would like to take on my new one's surname as I like it It is a Chinese surname. YAN I like the sound of it and it is very simple lol. So let's see if I do ever get properly married to him then I will use it, otherwise I will go back to my maiden name lol.

here in Italy women use their name, but they can add their husband'r surname to their maiden name or they can choose to introduce themselves with their husband's name, but legally they keep their name. of course there are some surnames that are more common than others, like Rossi or so on but we don't have problems like the ones you are describing about China. Suppose we are profiting by immigration, too. This is creating new variety in our society and is creating new colours, new couples and new surnames, too. I must admit I find East Europe surnames very difficult to pronounce because of the lack of vocals but languages are so beautiful that we can only learn from each others

that's an intersting perspective. in our country, wefind mixed surnames which is but the result of colonisation by the britishers, portuguese and dutch. we have an interesting mix of customs, colors and surnames aswell. thanx maribea.

I am from China, my surname is Yin, yes more and more people maybe use the same name, because now we used to adopt father's name and given name be used mostly common Chinese characters, later people will use longer name, for example, use father's name and mother's name for their own children.

My surname is Dias, well the chinese government has always had confusing policies so I'm not really suprised about their latest policy. I am not sure about my surname origins, but most probably attributed to portugal. My surname is very important to me as many more people know me by my surname then by my first name and then after that, my first name and surname together kind of have a ping to it ! Lol, i really love my name you see :D so i cant stop praising it !

Hello mimpi. Chinese surnames are normally short and limited only. I happened to have Chinese blood and using Chinese surname. In my high school days, its pretty common to see 3 or 5 similar surnames in each classes. Our teacher called us by our first or second names instead. All my documents bear my surname. I don't think there's any other way that I can lengthen it, LOL. I heard though that you can have the option to change your surname if you change your citizenship. I'm not 100% sure about this though.

I guess that would be very confusing for the Chinese! I wonder, will they start using strange first names or extra middle names for identification purposes? I use my own family name rather than my husband's. It is a matter of my own personal family pride, plus I prefer it. I just think it sounds nicer. He ought to use mine ;-)
