Strangness of The Furry Kind!

Over the years I have raised and been through the passing of several cats. Through those years I have also seen a whole variety of personalities and strangeness.
The most recent of strange events I have been witness to, I witnessed two months ago with my cat Casey. I have no clue what her deal is, nor does my vet and she's still trying to coming up with an answer for me.
Just what am I talking about you ask?
Well for the better part of two months now every time I change out the litter box, Casey will jump into it, before any of the other cats, and eat the litter. Gross I know, but at least she only does it when the litter is clean.
I have had her checked for everything you can imagine, even getting second and third opinions. All have concluded that she's a perfectly healthy kitty, albeit a little strange. My conclusion kitty has had a few lights upstairs go out. haha
So I'm leaving this topic open for discussion amongst the many fine users of MyLot. What or why do you think my cat's favorite pass time is eating freshly poured kitty litter? All thoughts, opinions, what have you are welcome.

Hi Hun! *hugs* Have missed you! I took a week break from MyLot land because my parents came down from Arizona for my daughters birthday. I'm back! LoL Anyhoo, hope all is well and to answer your question ...
I have NO clue why your cat would do that. I am really alergic to cats so I don't have any as pets. My only guess would be that the cat may have some digestive problems and the kitty litter helps? You did say that vets have looked the cat over and it is found to be healthy so I really have no clue. Sorry I'm not much help!

Hey! *hugs* Welcome back! :) I have missed ya to and have wondered where you ran off to. I hope you daughter's birthday was a good one.
No worries about being of help, just was looking for some theories that I could toss over to my vet for her to roll around in her brain for a bit. Though it's true Casey has been checked for digestive problems and nothing was found, she will be checked in another two weeks to see if anything hidden shows up.
Casey is the first cat I have owned that likes to eat litter and it's about to drive me crazy, cause even though I use a type of "natural" litter. I still don't think it can be any good for her to consume constantly.

Thanks for the welcome back hun!
I hope that you and your cats vet get to the bottom of it, and that everything works out ok. I agree that the cat consuming that much cat littler can't be good. Will cross my fingers for you, and please keep us posted hun.

You're welcome! :) I to hope that this gets solved soon. I worry about her like she was my own daughter, and never like it when family is sick, or I think they are sick. I'm gonna try changing the litter and see if that stops her from eating it. Crossing my fingers and toes that it will work.

Tsk tsk, jewelbluerose...are you starving your kitty...so hungry that Casey has to resort to eating kitty litter...LOL--just kidding...I don't know...some of my cats have had weird quirks too..used to have one that would love to unroll the toilet paper and eat it!! Depending on the kind of litter, clay kind?? I assume...sometimes pets will eat something if they sense a lack of some kind of nutrient ...the reason why some will chew on plants...the clay litters do have certain minerals in them..so maybe Casey's after the minerals...and come to think of it...one of my cats used to chew on litter too

Lol! Oh yes my cats are sooo starved that they have food down nearly 24/7. If they be starving it's their own fault. lol I give them a vet prescribed kitty vitamin everyday so I don't know if it could be a mineral difficincy. She's still under going a series of tests. So keeping my fingers crossed that it's nothing more than Casey being weird.

Hmmph, that is puzzling. Have you noticed anything else change with her -loose stool, throwing up more, etc? I am wondering if she eats the litter to get rid of acid in her stomach and she needs an anti-acid for a week or so. Or maybe she is having problems digesting the food you give her and she needs the gravel to help digest her foods like some birds need grit.

I'm here with her 24/7 practically, and that's the only thing I have noticed to have changed behavior wise. Her droppings look to be the same as they always were, and she don't seem to be straining at all or in any sort of pain when she goes potty. Plus haven't seen her throw up in awhile.
Since this behavior started I have been watching her real close, poor kitty hardly has any alone time anymore..lol But just want to make sure my cat is gonna be alright, cause have heard that a change in behavioral patterns can sometimes mean that there's some sort of hidden problem within their workings.
I'm thinking maybe changing the brand of litter to see if that gets her to stop. There may be something in the "natural" brand of cat litter I use that may be smelling like food to her, when it's freshly cleaned.

Cat are such cool creatures but they can get a little weird. The only thing I can think of is there must be some smell of fresh litter than your cat finds appealing for some reason. Or maybe that's her way of claiming it as hers. I don't profess to know what goes on in a cats head, if I tried I'd probably go crazy.. LOL
I had a cat who had to taste jump up on the counter and take a bite of lettuce every time I made a salad. I know they like greens now and then but lettuce? Didnt' matter if there were onions in it or garlic powder or salad dressing. Never more than one piece but she just had to have that one piece. So I started putting a piece in her bowl when I'd make salad.... nope that wouldn't do, it had to be out of the salad bowl. Okey dokey

I do have to agree cats are amazing animals, and yeah they can get a bit weird at times. I think when I do my grocery shopping today I will get a different brand of kitty litter and see if that stops her from eating the litter. I was thinking to, that since I use a natural type of cat litter, there may be something in it that smells like some sort of food to her.
My husband argues that if there was something food smelling in there the other cats would be eating it to, but I don't think they'd necessarily would. Cats can be picky when they want to be.
All my cats here love lettuce. Since we get the pre-shredded kind from the store when we are planning on having hamburgers or chicken sandwiches. As soon as they hear that bag opening they are around our feet in hopes that we'll drop some, since it's a no-no for them to jump up on the counters while we are trying to prepare our food. Sometimes I will place some on a plate for them, and they gobble it up in no time at all.

Cats are really expressive creatures in their own little ways. Sometimes in my opinion they are trying to tell us humans things, but we just aren't understanding them.
