Books you love reading and do not want to end.

I like books, I read 2 or 3 at a time.  Once in a while I will find a book, that I love.  When this happens, I take special care when it gets near the end chapters to take my time.  I have never been one to peek at the ending. I have spend to much time reading and guessing what would happen next that I didn't want to ruin it.   I have been known to put off the reading of the end of a good book.  I put my can goods in alphabetical order.  I clean out my linen closet.  I count the leaves on the rose bushes.   Having a good book, is like having a good friend over for vacation.  You know she has to go home, but you want to keep on telling stories and having tea.  I hold the book like a new born baby.  I tenderly keep it from wrinkles.  I have 3 favorite books.  Amazonian: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (P.S.): Books: Betty Smith  , Amazonian: She's Come Undone: Books: Wally Lamb   and Amazonian: The Kite Runner (River head Essential Editions): Books: Khaled Hosseini .   Why I love them is because they are about young folks that changed themselves and their world.  I also love "got ya " moments and they were in those books.   I could been Francie Nolan in " A Tree Grown In Brooklyn", she loved Brooklyn so do I.  I could have been Dolores Price in "She Has Come Undone".  In fact I am her.  She was me growing up, weight problems and all.  Her "Got ya" moment was the best yet!.  In the "Kite Runner" the young boy Amir was the son of a servant.  This book takes you from his young days in Afghanistan to his middle years in  California.  The " Got ya" moment in this book  is not to be missed.  When I finish it, I pat it on the cover and put it in a soft spot so it will not get torn. Then I go on line and order it for everyone that I know will love it. I have done that with "She Had Come Undone" so many time I keep them on hand now. The other books I donate to our club house or I put them on Bookins Book Exchange, Swap Books, Free Bookswap, Free Books,Used Books, Paper . I get credit for each book I read and send to them, I than have 1000's of others to choice from to get in return. It cost nothing to send a book, they pay the postage. If you order one you pay $3.99. It is a really go way to share books. Books are a way to enjoy new views on life, to escape to far off places, to figure out a mystery or laugh at yourself. From the moment your mom and dad read you one to bed time to the moment you sit in a comfortable place to read one yourself you are getting a moment to dream.

I don't want the book to end either, but I can't put it off, like you. When I have 50 to 100 pages left, I won't go to sleep until I've finished. I've also stayed in bed late in the morning to finish a book. I always have another new book ready to read, or I just wouldn't know what to do with myself. I usually have 3 or 4 books that I read, and I keep them right by my bed. I always loved Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, and Pearl S. Buck's the Good Earth. I read the Lord of the Rings trilogy several times, and Douglas Adams Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe. When my kids grew up and moved out, I turned my son's room into a library. I have a shelf with favorite books that I'll read again, and I have several shelves of new books I haven't read yet. It's really great to have so many to choose from. Thanks for mentioning your favorites, I'll have to check them out. I remember watching the Oprah show when the Wally Lamb book was Oprah's book club choice. It looked interesting.

I love to read but I definitely do not have you restrainte, when the story is too intense I may take a break and do something else but more times then not I will skip forward into the book to see what happens next. Though I will read most books more then once since I find that sometimes in my haste to find the outcome I miss details that give a different dimension to the story. I admit that I do not read nearly as much as I would like and nowhere near as much as you, sometimes due to lack of time and mostly as I love to read in bed and when I finaly get there I fall asleep without finishing a page. In summer I use my local library extensively, and I am a pack rat so during the year there are several promotions and book fairs where I live, then I will buy books and keep them for when I have time. My friends and family do the same thus when we get together we swap books and read each others selections. I do tend to see more cinama now, though I watch block busters and enjoy them, the adaptions of my favourite books are always seen with a pinch of salt, as often happens your favourite part or character never lives to expectaion. At time I prefer to see the movie first as the book is always better and thus it cannot disappoint.

You picked three of my all-time favorite books with 'The Kite Runner' being my latest classic novel of all time. As for the other two ('She's Come Undone' and 'A Tree Grows in Brooklyn'), I loved them so much that I have read them both several times. A good story is one to be savored and, I believe, to be told over and over again. Each time I have re-read one of my favorite books, I find something else in the story I didn't see previously. I like getting books from half.com. I also have sold a number of books through this website. I get great books for very little money and I can re-sell them when I'm done with them. My latest read is 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' also by Khaled Hosseni. He is a wonderful storyteller.

My most favorite books were: Clan of the Cave Bear and Little House on the Praire. When I finished one of the books, I couldn't wait to get the next bunch of chapters and when they all ended, I would often feel sad, as if I lost my best friend!

Wow, I just finished 'when the wind blows' by James Patterson, what an incredible book...I just downloaded "the lake house" which is the next book in the 2 book series. I loved the Alex Cross Series and the Women's Murder club..but When the Wind Blows is by far the most intriguing. I do ebooks...they don't impact the environment, even though you recycle or trade..gas is being used to deliver that book. I get my books with a 3 sec download and can carry a library in my purse with out even a wee bit of back strain. But i think the important thing is that we read..so much better then watching TV. I seem to be averaging about 2-3 books a week the past couple of months. My vocabulary has grown in leaps and bounds and I think it has helped improve my memory.

Thanks for sharing that. I also have books that I wish wouldn't end. R.A. Salvatore does a 'Dark Elf', 'Icewind Dale', and 'Lone Drow' trilogies that all go together. It's a 'Forgotten Realms' series and it's awesome. When the author started, it was a book about a barbarian named Wulfgar. People enjoyed the book alot, but they wanted to know more about Wulfgars sidekick. Drizzt is a dark elf with lavendar eyes. He is an anomaly within his race. The drow are evil, unlike any evil you've read before. This race of elves live underground, and they stay in their own families. They can have an unlimited amount of daughters, but only a couple of boys. If more boys are born, they get sacrificed. Drizzt was born into a family of enough boys, so he was to be sacrificed. Unseen forces interceded and Drizzt was allowed to live. Big mistake for the drow. Drizzt grew up, found that he had a heart and soul, was exiled out of his home, and he travelled the world(sort of). He was shunned by almost everyone, because drow are evil and all the races know it. They only come to the surface for raids. Anyway, Drizzt finds a friend or two along the way, and one is Wulfgar. It's an awesome story, and I enjoy reading it.

There are quite a few books that I find a wonderful read. My most favorite has to be Hamlet, I have read that play over and over again and I still find it a great read. I also like The black Jewel Trilogies by Anne Bishop. Those books are awesome. So vivid and colorful, they send your imagination into overdrive. Anything by Stephen king I find as a good read, his deep and twisted nature is just amazing to me.

The list of books I'd like to never end is way too long to be put here. I will not include the Bible, because Scriptures, although marvellous good literature, belong to life. So I'll just mention three that I read again, and again: "Shakespeare's Complete Works" -well, there are editions where they are all together, so I count them as one. "Treasure Island" -this was my first novel, I couldn't get enough of John Silver and his parrot. Even now, time and again, I have a quick reprise. "Love in the Times of Cholera" -Garcia Marquez is a great author, he appeared on Colombia to last in world literature. But this is his utmost best. A song of life and love, although a very unconventional love. Thanks to you and the other posters for sharing your favorites, you inspired my interest and I will look out for some of them.
