So, some of you know that I will be going in for surgery next week. They have told me that it will be done while I am awake using local anaesthetic.. However this really scares me and I have now found out that I do have the choise to also go under regular anaesthetic and sleep through the whole thing. I do think that this will be my choise since I am so scared, however I would like to know some pro´s and cons about this.
What would u do? Would u like to be awazke or asleep during the surgery?

Hello,marie2473,actually you do not need to worry about having local anesthetic,if the doctor said it is fine, then there will be no problem.
If you have your whole body anaesthetized, you may need to sleep for one day or so after the operation and take a bit longer time for recovery, during that time, due to the effect of the anaesthetic, you may loss your appetite or even keep puking as your diestive system may have affected by the anaesthetic.
May be i will choose to be awake.

Well for me, personally I hate to be put to sleep so I always opt to have a local done. Once the procedure is finished, I can just walk away, no wake up period or feeling crummy after wards. I have had part of my cervix removed to a tumor taken off my shoulder, all while awake and I have no regrets. Now when my tonsils were removed I had no choice, they put me to sleep. It was awful, I got sick to my stomach afterwards and it took me a day just to shake that terrible buzz.
What ever you choose, I wish the all the best.

Marie, I agree with your choice, and it's what I would do also. We don't need to add stress by worrying about having local anesthesia instead of general. I'd much rather just wake up after it's done. I've never had any problems with anesthesia...yet. Good luck, take care, God Bless, and we'll wait to hear how well you're doing after the surgery.

Oh my gosh ... take the regular and go to sleep and wake up when it is all over, that is my vote. Why stay awake when you are already scared it will only make you and the procedure worse. Yes, yes, yes our prays were answered for you!

Marie i have to tell you that you do not have to fear.
The people that are going to do the surgery on you are professionals, they learned alote of years till they became doctors, they know what they are doing, and they will do it without pain and the best job that they know.
Just do not worry, everything will be ok.
Just do not think about it, live it all to them.
I would go on the local anaesthetic, from experience it is better for your body, and the body will recover faster.
Just pick up a good cheerful song that you like, and sing it while you are having the surgery, it will take your mind off from their doings, and it will be finished before you know it.
Do a local anaesthetic not a regular one.

When I went through the knife, I asked my surgeon to put me to sleep; I had a spinal anaesthesia but it was a major surgery. I did not feel any pain at all, and the next time I became conscious, I was already in my room. It was really scaring the first time I went through it. It was really an ordeal, but I had to go through it, otherwise it would be a threat to my life. Well, looking back, I can say that I became more courageous because the next time I had major surgery, I was braver, but still prayed so hard. In my second experience, I also asked again to sleep and woke up again already in my room.

I was on local anaesthetic when I had to do a major gum surgery... At first it was hell.... I didn't know what were to come, but after the injections were given, I didn't feel the pain but I know the doctor was doing something to my gums. I was awake but unable to see the procedure as they had covered the lower part of my face. It was something that I cannot forget to this day... I am not sure about the pro's and con but it was an experience I will live to tell others... It's kinda weird feeling....

I dont know what kind of surgery you are having but 6 weeks ago my man had a total hip replacement under local anaesthetic. He though it was great - he said the only problem he found was that he could hear them - sawing, etc but he never felt a thing. He has to have the right one done too and plans to have it done under local too. Good luck and I hope you recover very soon.

Hey friend regarding to question on your surgery operation i preferred to be asleep during the surgery bcos being awake on surgery can make you hate your self bcos you will be watching yourself carrying out operation on your body.
wish you best of luck on your surgery

I am a practitioner of Alternative Medicine in my country. My opinion is to hold the surgery first. Please do realize that a lot of people in your situation have gotten well using purely natural methods. I couldn't stand not responding after only reading a few of your discussions. I have nothing monetary to gain by helping you, I am on a mission to help in whatever way I can, people who are sick. This mission comes so I could show God how much I appreciate that He gave me another chance to get well. You see, I had so many illnesses a few years ago that I couldn't stand anymore. Presently I have gotten well enough to work again. Please send me an email of whatever test results you have so I could read, interpret and help you in my little way. Thanks.

If it's general operation, for sure you'll be asleep if only minor then you are awake but you can't feel the pain coz anaesthesia for that.
Trust your doctors folk!

Dear Marie,
I just had a abdominal hysterectomy and I was asleep during the process. I had a spinal block which was great. I did wake up during the process but couldn't feel a thing. I heard them say I was done and was wheeled out to the recovery room. I would rather be asleep. I told my doctor that I woke up and he said, "we give you just enough meds so you can't talk to us." I laughed...good luck to you.

Hi. I went through an appendectomy a few weeks ago and they had me conscious while they did the operation. To be perfectly honest, I was awake but not really fully conscious. The anaesthetic they gave me, although it didnt make me fall asleep, made me a little groggy and the entire operation was like a very short dream. You really dont have to be scared. The doctors know what they are doing and if they suggest you dont need to be unconscious during the entire process, it will be okay. Besides, you wont be able to see the area of the body where they are working. They will cover that up with a piece of sheet. Good luck in your surgery.
