Well, I am not starting this topic to cause fights or controversy, but I have seen this topic posted on other forums, and it had some very neat debates. So I thought maybe here on mylot with the many cultures, religions, and backrounds, the answers would lead to an interesting debate. - DNatureofDTrain

No, the Lord Jesus was not a pagan. He is the only begotten Son of God. God sent Him into the world to take the sin of the world. He was under the Law (Old Testament) and He obeyed His Father despite everything until His crucifixion.

She has no clue either. But anyways, if in fact there was a Jesus then the answer is....who knows? I do not believe in a Jesus nor do I believe in a God. Am I wrong? Well, maybe I am and maybe I am not. My personal thoughts are that if there was a Jesus then he probably wanted people to follow him no different then the pope of our days. He was actually able to convince people that he was the son of some being that no one could visually see and people followed. Now another thought to ponder. What I spoke of above is based on a religion. Now how about a definition? The original definition of Pagan is "Etymology: Middle English, from late Latin paganus, from Latin, civilian, country dweller, from pagus country district, akin to Latin pangere to fix" Ok now if we go by this definition then YES Jesus was a Pagan. He was in fact a civilian, a country dweller and he was a carpenter there for a "fix"er. It was not until the Christian religion decided to "hate" those who do not follow them that a new definition was set in place which read "HEATHEN: especially: a follower of a polytheistic religion (as in ancient Rome)" also "one who has little or no religion and who delights in sensual pleasures and material goods; an irreligious or hedonistic person" This tells me that since they wanted to hate the romans for killing this Jesus person they in turn wanted to exclaim that the romans were pagan. In a nutshell they want to link killers with this term and in turn make other think we are of the devil and of sin. Also, sensual pleasures? Are you kidding me? How many pagan children in "pagan" religions have you heard about getting molested by their "teachers"??? Yeah, now what! Anyways, material good really gets me mad too cause in the old days and even now the pagan do NOT ask for anything from people. They do not ask for X% of your paycheck. They do not ask you to starve yourself or your children on any given day. Get real! Ok, so there are my several cents, I am sure to catch flack for it but I am up to the challenge.

You are correct in your definition of the word "pagan" I'd just like to add the additional information that the word probably came to be used to mean a non - christian because during the Roman period, christianity was mostly a religion of urban dwellers while the majority of the country dwellers still followed the old religions.

The correct answer is both "Yes" and "No", depending on which version of the story you subscribe to. If you believe that he was a practicing Jew and framed his preaching within the confines of Judaism then the answer is "NO". If you subscribe to the idea that Jesus was an Essene then the answer is "YES". This is due to the definition of Pagan. It actually has nothing to do with religion, it has to do with community. Pagan comes from the Latin word "Paganus" meaning "an old country dweller, rustic". This is a person who is apart from the general stream of the society. As such as a practicing Jew he would have been a member of that society and therefore not pagan. If he were an Essene which was a very removed sect of Judaism then he would be pagan because this particular organization was purposefully separate from society and would meet the definition perfectly.

Personally, I dn't believe in Jesus, but from what I have read of the bible, no, if he did exist, he was a Jewish Rabbi with radical ideas.
