Earlier today I had a phone call from a friend who has gone home to Bermuda for 7 weeks - 7 weeks! She sounded a bit funny and asked me what was up, I went through some things I thought she could have been asking about and drew a blank! Well it turns out that someone has stolen my identity on messenger and was being really nasty to several of my friends, although most realised it wasn't me by the things that were being said. I found this really upsetting and have no idea how they got my password etc! It got even worse cos I coud not log in to try to sort it out! I believe I have the problem sorted now and have upgraded my messenger but I am still so puzzled as to why anyone would want to steal my id much less abuse and upset my friends! Has anything like this ever happened to you? How did you sort it? and the biggie, did you ever find out who stole your id and if so why? xxx

It is the first time I had heard of it Calais but seemingly it isn't too hard to do and you are advised to change your password regularly! I am so glad that most of my friends could tell straightaway it wasn't me by the way they'spoke' that when they were nasty my friends didn't think it was me! xxx

It has never happened to me but it sounds like it can create a big mess! I often why people who are intelligent enough to figure stuff out like that don't use their brains to do something good with it....instead they steal things, create viruses...etc. Go figure. Hope you got it all sorted out!

No Sweetie it has never happened to me yet
As I said to you this morning because I stay on invisible I never got it but I would have phoned you as soon as I would have done as I know it is not you
I kept seeing you log in and out but I did not go on visible because I know that sometimes your other half is on there. That was yesterday morning, I was only on because I was waiting for my Mum to come on
I do hope you have got it sorted and that it does not happen again

Why would someone want to do that... it is crazy. I'm glad your friends know you well enough for this to have not gotten too out of hand.
I have not had this happen to me, but then, I don't use my messenger very much.
It should be easy to catch these people, I hope they do.

That is the lesson in all this. We need to change passwords now and then.

Oh mummymo for you of all people to have that happen to! That is messed up! I would know if someone like that were pretending to be you. I am glad they figured it out right away and let you know. There are some sad, small little buggers out there, aren't there?!
Someone tried to get my tax information recently. I received a letter in the mail saying they wouldn't send me my information because they couldn't identify me by mail. I hadn't requested any information, and didn't know anything about it. When I called them up theu had no record of the request and weren't able to enlighten me beyond they had received a request and sent out a form letter. I'd sure like to know who did that and why!

Thank you pigeon honey for that and yes there really are - I said some really bad words when I found out - think I embarrassed myself, I'm not even sure what some of them meant! lol
That is horrible - I mean messenger is bad enough but I would be so angry if I knew someone was trying to pry into my finances - not that there is much to know - apart from all the bills! I do hope you have no more problems with them! xxx

It certainly inspires a bit of paranois, doesn't it? The weird thing is my surname used to be hyphenated, which I never bothered dropping on my tax info, although I had it changed on every other piece of ID, and theletter came adressed to that name. I was almost not able to prove to them I was me because of that, so whoever else is trying, good luck to them! It was reassuring how tight they were with it, but it seemed that someone tried from some other address with my current name, but they sent their answer to me, which is the real address/name on file. Pretty freaky!

It has never happened to me. But I know of people who has been hacked, not only on MSN, but also Orkut.
There are several things that could lead your account to be hacked. Maybe you visited a friend/public comptuer and forgot the MSN open. Did you visit any Lan House lately?
Also, your computer may have KeyLoggers: why don't you scan it?
Did someone send you any strange files?
Those things could have happened, you know? Those are only some of the things that could have happened.

Does somebody else knows your password? If someone does, no matter who the person is, might be the cause. Does someone?

I don't use any messengers so I don't have that problem. Stealing your identity like that is really sick, and it seems strange that they managed to get your password and log in as you.
I think that most of your friends would realise that it wasn't you contacting them, even if your Irn Bru can turn you a bit wicked (but not unpleasant) sometimes.

Yes luckily they all realised that it wasn't me but it could have been messy if they didn't know me so well! Can't drink my special Irn Bru just now as I am back on heay duty painkillers again! It is strange and twisted - how can thar give anyone pleasure! xxx

thankfully this has never happened to me,
(knock on wood) I cannot believe that this happened. Why would someone want to do that? I hope none of your friends are mad at you..I do not know why people do such things...I am sorry you had to deal with this and I hope you can fix it!=)

Yes that never happened to me too!! But it is not impossible and not strange too. Still it is nice to know that it actually happened and I would be careful about this in future. I use messenger almost all the time. This is really really aweful. Did you send some report to messenger adminstration or somewhere? May be thats good to let them know the thing.

Of course it's very disrespectful. Do you know anyone who has a reason to harm you and put your friends against you? Someone who is jealous of you maybe? Well, it might have been done by someone who doesn't even know you though.
One thing that I never do is letting my password saved on the computer. It's much easier for it to be stolen this way. There are a few programs who keep track of the internet traffic, and it's not difficult at all to find passwords saved on the computer though them (I did it myself and found out my own password that I forgot once).
If you share the internet network with more people (like people from the same building, for example) it might be easier for them to find out things too. I have a friend who accidentally got MSN messages from his neighbor while making some tests at home.
There are also a few keylogger programs, which keep track of everything you type, including IDs and passwords.
So, be careful, someone might be watching you.

Well laridbz I have wracked my brains for anyone that I could have angered or upset that may want to get at me but I honestly can think of no-one! I did realise that at one point my laptop had connected to another wireless network that was unsecure (I don't know why) rather than on our own secure network! This is the only thing I can think of! We have scanned and rescanned the computer and have found nothing untoward there but I have become a lot more security conscious since this happened! Thanks for your advice my friend! xx

Several years ago, Yahoo shut down my account for no apparent reason. But, I've always suspected that someone hacked my username and then sent emails or rude chat messages to my friends list. I wouldn't be surprised if it happened again. It's hard not leaving bread crumbs to follow all over the Internet. Just best not to use real names online, so someone will have harder time tracing you. I hope it works out for you, and that everyone understands it wasn't your fault. Those things do happen. We just feel it worse when it happens to us.

First of all I would like to say thank you for taking the time out to respond to many of my discussions beautyqueen - I have enjoyed your responses! It really does sound like someone had hacked your Yahoo account - I cannot understand why anyone would do this and what pleasure they get out of it! Luckily in my case , my friends knew it wasn't me because they know I wouldn't talk to them in that way! The account was shut down at my request and although microsoft were looking into it I haven't heard anymore but I have opened a new messenger account and I am now more aware of security issues! xxx

dude really sad to hear what hapnd to u. It hasent hapnd to me the way u have mentioned. But a friend of mine had somehow hacked my password and had started harmless threats ..ki i know whom u chat with etc. I'll start acting weirdly with them. Especially the girl u like blah blah. I asked him why is he doing this ??? and he had no answer for that. Its strange sometimes how ppl end up doing wrong things..with no reasons whatsoever.Thankfully nothing bad hapnd to me as he was my friend and he just let me change the password...and now he doesnt know what it is lol

Sad.to read your story of identity theft.really now i am getting worried to use messenger ...thinking at any day it might be my turn ..Thank God you have overcome the challenge successfully. But I cant understand if anyone can do this to someone whom he/she does not know so easily than whats the security of transaction that taken place online..in various online programs .There is a possibility that if you use the messenger id in internet cafe or anywhere in public place..than it might be someone around you who saw your id and password and stole the id . Anyway all will be alert now finding your instance. Thanks Mummymo to alert us showing your example. God bless you.

That was a terrible ordeal my friend, as if you haven't got enough on your plate as it is, what with Niamh. You feel totally violated and that someone has robbed you, I went through the same thing with my phone, now some shite has got hold of all my personal details, my prized photos, texts and phone numbers and I can tell you I felt sick, the emotions are anger, hurt and frustration. Takes a while to get over it and another slice of trust has been lost to people. Here's a hug, it always happens to the lovely people in this world x

Oh dear, why did this have to happen to you. I don´t understand why people do this, I guess they get their adrenaline going by steeling someone´s privacy.
It´s never happened to me, because no one in the house uses Messenger, precisely because there are so many problems, like viruses for example, which is the one I´m most concerned about. I know Messenger is a good and convenient way to communicate but I just don´t trust it. Whenever one of us needs it we go to a Cybercafé. Luckily there are quite a few within walking distance.
Having your identity stolen must be a very upsetting experience. Sorry you have to deal with yet another problem.
Hugs
Dana

I was more upset that they had been so nasty to my friends than anything else dana!
I can understand why you don't like it but I do like the ease of staying in contact with family and friends. We don't really have any internet cafes nearby and I wouldn't be able to get to them just now if we did! Thank you for the support sweets - I am still smiling! lol Big Hugs xxxx

i didnt have similar experience as that my but aunt had the same experience...she is using a different ID before..then all of a sudden she cant log in to her yahoo account anymore..but since she is not that good on the internet...she went ahead and created a new one...since her old email account is still on our list of contacts, there are times that we see the OLD id ONLINE! but we send a msg, its not replying, then goes offline all of a sudden...its always been like that...then we PM the user to how he is, but didnt get any reply..there are even times that she online until now, but we stil didnt who the user is.

I don't think that someone have stoled my id on messenger because I change my password at lest every month, I don't know how often this happen to you but if it is happen very often your computer would be infected with a keylogger, it can record every that you type in your computer and send the info to a mail so you should to get a good antispyware.
I think maybe you don't have a strong password with letters and number and special characters remember write the password in a book or something it is more safe that save the password in a file in the computer.
if the person that stoled your id send a email to your contact you can figure out where is he, checking the sender ip, it work fine on hotmail.

Steve first off welcome to mylot - I do hope you are enjoying it here! Thank you very much for the good advice, I have been scanning it and have spyware installed - I think I am free from a keylogger but I did have my partner double check and he says my laptop is clear! I think the advice about the password is very good - espescially keeping it written down somewhere - you must know how forgetful I am! I have done this now! Microsoft are looking into the case but I think we have managed to delete the account! I really appreciate all your good advice my friend! xxx
