Why are you in the writing profession?

Are you a professional writer? Is writing your full-time job? I just wanna know why you choose to write instead of pursuing other fields like law, medicine, etc. I write because I find it easy and I think this is what I do best.

I love to write, and that's why I do it. I'm not a full time writer, although it wouldn't be a bad idea as I've applied for other jobs for the summer and I can't get anything. I pretty much write part time, but I really should get my act together and churn out more so I can get some better pay.

I've been in the publishing business (as an editor) for many years. I am on a self-imposed sabatical from that, and I've always wanted to focus on writing. Trust me, fixing other people's bad writing is easier than coming up with your own bad writing. So, I am trying to pursue that at the moment. I am amazed when I read someone's book that is so lyrical and beautiful. I just wonder how they managed to do that!

I wish you the best in your writing pursuits! I'm curious how the transition has been for you. Have you been editing your work as you go along, or are you able to write freely?

I too wish you the best. I'm a full-time editor, and you're exactly right. Fixing another person's prose is painful at best, dementia-inducing the rest of the time.

Thanks for the best response pencil, four months later. I do really read everything, even old emails from MyLot that I somehow overlooked at the time. As for my own writing, well I've been doing a lot of book reviews, started my own blog, and just this week, did an author interview (someone who's already written 5 books). I guess I am still having a hard time transitioning to my own writing (fiction from scratch that is). I'm going to be better tomorrow, I swear! ;o)

I wouldn't exactly call writing my profession either. I have dreamed of being a published author for many years. I am currently a member of a writing group which has inspired me and motivated me to follow my dream. I have taken that dream and expanded on it with poetry and short stories. I received an email today indicating a poetry anthology was being put together and to submit my best poetry. I am going through my poems and putting aside what I consider to be "my best". The pile is growing. Perhaps I should just publish my own anthology of poetry. Except... poetry doesn't sell. :(

I write in order to breathe. Okay, so I stole that line from another writer. (Anne Lamott, maybe?) I write because I was born with the passion to tell stories. I wish I could make a living at it full-time, but I'm working on it.

If you are going to steal from anyone, Anne Lamott is a pretty good person to steal from. I loved her book, "Bird by Bird." It's one of the best books on writing I've ever read.

I recently picked up her book, Finding Water, a sequel to Bird by Bird. It looks pretty good.

I am a full-time writer (note I said writer and not editor...hahah). I did pursue other fields and have a degree and certificates in other areas, but it all works into my writing and helps me get freelance jobs. For me, writing is something I just do naturally and always have. It's also something I can do from home and I choose what type of work I want to do. It's simply a fantastic profession.

I work as a full-time editor, but I write articles a lot of the time. I could avoid it if I wanted to, but, I write because sometimes it just pours out.

Do you edit fiction or nonfiction?

Straight non-fiction. It's a shame too. There's nothing better than well-crafted fiction. In fact, if you discount the imagination, it's the basis for all positive change.
