Why are you in the writing profession?

I love to write, and that's why I do it. I'm not a full time writer, although it wouldn't be a bad idea as I've applied for other jobs for the summer and I can't get anything. I pretty much write part time, but I really should get my act together and churn out more so I can get some better pay.

I've been in the publishing business (as an editor) for many years. I am on a self-imposed sabatical from that, and I've always wanted to focus on writing. Trust me, fixing other people's bad writing is easier than coming up with your own bad writing. So, I am trying to pursue that at the moment. I am amazed when I read someone's book that is so lyrical and beautiful. I just wonder how they managed to do that!

I too wish you the best.
I'm a full-time editor, and you're exactly right.
Fixing another person's prose is painful at best, dementia-inducing the rest of the time.

Thanks for the best response pencil, four months later. I do really read everything, even old emails from MyLot that I somehow overlooked at the time.
As for my own writing, well I've been doing a lot of book reviews, started my own blog, and just this week, did an author interview (someone who's already written 5 books). I guess I am still having a hard time transitioning to my own writing (fiction from scratch that is). I'm going to be better tomorrow, I swear! ;o)

I wouldn't exactly call writing my profession either. I have dreamed of being a published author for many years. I am currently a member of a writing group which has inspired me and motivated me to follow my dream. I have taken that dream and expanded on it with poetry and short stories.
I received an email today indicating a poetry anthology was being put together and to submit my best poetry. I am going through my poems and putting aside what I consider to be "my best". The pile is growing. Perhaps I should just publish my own anthology of poetry. Except... poetry doesn't sell. :(

If you are going to steal from anyone, Anne Lamott is a pretty good person to steal from. I loved her book, "Bird by Bird." It's one of the best books on writing I've ever read.

I am a full-time writer (note I said writer and not editor...hahah). I did pursue other fields and have a degree and certificates in other areas, but it all works into my writing and helps me get freelance jobs.
For me, writing is something I just do naturally and always have. It's also something I can do from home and I choose what type of work I want to do. It's simply a fantastic profession.

I work as a full-time editor, but I write articles a lot of the time. I could avoid it if I wanted to, but, I write because sometimes it just pours out.

Straight non-fiction.
It's a shame too.
There's nothing better than well-crafted fiction.
In fact, if you discount the imagination, it's the basis for all positive change.
