My son has had seizures since the age of three after an accident, in which he recieved a Tramatic Brain Injury. He aslo has Arnold Chiari Malformation type 1. Doctors have diagnosed him with epilepsy, a mood disorder and a learning disorder. After three months on prescribed meds, his behavor was worsening....He usually cries unexpectedly and angers easily. At the tender age of 5 we were already seeing a therapist, because he would often bang his head on the wall when angry. At that time he was on Phenobarbutal & doctors sugested that we take him off of it. For four years he seemed to be fine, exept for his failing at school but then his harmful behavior seemed to be esculating. At that point doctors prescibed TEGRETOL, beliving that it would suppress his seizure enough not to interfere with his accademics, and that he would be less frustrated, so then the self injury would not come about. But it still didn't work! last month we went off island to see a "specialist" and he once again changed his meds to "VALPORIC ACID aka DEPAKOTE", the specialist told me that he is prescibing the depakote, because it will help my son with his MOOD DISORDER, but he is actually geeting worse! He gave himself a black eye the other day, when my daughter asked him for a peice of gum...he began to cry and punch himself in the face, I held him down while he kicked, bit and pulled my hair for atleast ten minutes (Thats what the THERAPIST reccomended I do. Afterwords I took pictures of his face and brought him to see his doctor. She told us to get bloodwork done to see how much meds he has in his system, but is positive that his behavior is not from the depakote. After the labs came back....they were normal....Now they say that he needs to see a Psychiatrist, because they can't prescibe meds for his mood disorder. I Love my son with all my heart! But at times I don't know how much more I can take, it is so hard to have a child with a disability. It hurts me so much when I have to pysically restain him durring his mood swing! I don't know what else I can do....Any tips or advice will be greatly appreciated!

I would love nothing more than to bring him to a psychiatrist, but we don't have one on island! The hospital has informed me that they will be bringing one in to see my son. I can't do anything but cross my fingers and hope that they do. Thank you for your response:)

I admire your courage, and you have all my sympathy, because that is all that anyone can offer you, your doctor is probably giving you the best advice.

I am so sorry to hear what you are going through with your child. I don't think there is anything more that you can do! Just be patient and pray that he will get over it! Maybe you need to see better doctors, if it has been like this for a long time you need to get a second opinion! I wish you all the luck and I hope you feel better.
