I think sometimes we do it to push our boundries, to get really scared but still be in our safety zone. It is different knowing it isn't real but scary all the same. There are certain gory movies that if they are based on real life I find it hard to or don't watch them. I guess it is the adreliane rush or the happy ending in most of these kind of films where the good guy kills the bad guys and ands up with the girl, it is what people would like to happen. But in real life the good people cant always dodge a bullet when they are being shot at by ten people, or be the hero and win, I guess because they are still fake it takes you to that unreal world of fantasy, if you start to compare them to real life it takes the fantasy idea away and yeah they do seem to be untasteful, but I think we all like to think that the real world isn't like this and are blind to that fact. Movies make it less real and I suppose maybe some watch them in a type of denial? That only happens in the movies kind of thinking, I am not sure.
