Earlier this week we heard about an Brittany Spaniel being at the dog pound who was about to be put down because he hadn't found a new home. So of course upon hearing that my fiancee insisted we go meet the dog to see if we would be able to give the poor thing a home. When we got there the poor thing looked so sad. He did kinda look like a Brittany Spaniel but we could tell that he was an Irish Setter instead. He has such a sweet personality so we decided to adopt him. The pound didn't have any kind of information on him. No name, age, or anything. Well every name we have tried so far he ignores. So I am asking everyone to please suggest some names for us to try. He is a red and white Irish Setter.

I rescued an enlish pointer from the shelter I worked at, he was a very bright dog.He did all the right stuff for us. We just had a heck of a time with the name.Nothing just suited him. I was outside working on the fence and couldnt get done what I was trying to do and said "Stupid thing" He trotted right over to me. I didnt want to call such a smart dog "stupid" but that was all he would respond too.

LOL He responded to "dang dog" this morning when my daughter was upset because he helped her eat her breakfast. Just not sure that's a good name.

I adopted a female dog, and her name at the pound was Lily which didn't fit because she is black. So I named her Sadie. She came to that name because I looked at her and acted excited and called that name in a "let's have fun voice". She cmae to me and responded. In a matter of days she knew that was her name.
My point is maybe when you decide on a name that you like for you dog, you should try calling him that name while trying to get him to come to you and with offers of affection and petting him.
I had a male dog named Jo-Jo. He was so cute. I love that name for cute dogs.
Now I have Sadie, and my male dog is huge and I named him Jake.
I hope you tell us all what you end up naming your dog. Have fun.

My fiancee has been doing the what you suggested the last couple of days. The children wanted to name him Patches so she has been trying to get him to respond to that name. She even gives him doggy treats when he responds. Hasn't worked yet.

Castleghost,
I'm glad that you have saved this dog from being put down. May God bless your fiancee and you. I just don't understand why some people would like to put down dogs. Dogs have souls, too. Just because they are animals, it doesn't mean that they don't have feelings.
I am sure that the dog is sad because perhaps, he might have a master previously. So, he might miss his previous master. You know... dogs are always loyal to their master. I think if both of you love him and give food that he likes, he will be thankful for you. He may gradually forget his past.
Here are a website about Alphabetical Dog Names
http://www.seefido.com/html/alphabetical_dog_name_list_ind.htm
You can choose whatever you like and let's see which name he also likes.

I have to admit that my fiancee is good about winner dogs over. She has a way with animals that makes them loyal to her. He has figured out to go to her when he wants something. He does seem to be in a happier mood today so we know things are looking up for him. I appreciate the link that you gave me. I never even thought about doing a search on the Internet.
I also want to say thank you for the compliment that you gave us. Like you we don't understand the need to take any creatures life.

You should really name him something you guys like. He will eventually learn the name, there isn't a specific name out there he will respond to right now. But I do love helping with names! lol.
~Casper
~Carter
~Pharaoh
~Ben
~Titan
~Crisco
~Kayota
~Diesel
~Bix
~Beau
~AlCapone ;P
Lol sorry if you don't like any of those names. I know some of them are a bit...unique...but I like names like that! =P Good look with the new pup! :) How old is he by the way?

We actually don't know for sure how old he is. My fiancee is taking him to our vet Monday so hopefully she will be able to tell us. I would guess he is a couple of years old.
A couple of the names you suggested we have tried with no luck. I will try the rest to see if he will respond. We thought we would ask the people on mylot to help us so that we could get a variety of names to help us. You did a wonderful job thanks.

I would name him Lucky.....simply because I think it's fitting....since he got lucky and found a home in the last minute.
I've had many stray dogs and I never know what their names used to be before they showed up at our door.....but after a few days they do respond to the name I end up giving them.Whatever name you decide on.....just repeat it often and sooner or later the dog will get used to it.
Here are some of the names I gave the dogs I had....Lucy...Wallie....Siggi....Button....Princess.....Peanut.....Hershey...Sugar....Bell....Spike.
Well I hope this helps.

Fred is a very unusual name but the long version is Fast Freddy. This dog can run pretty fast when he wants to.

Thanks for the help. The kids had started calling him Fred the day that we got him. It took a week but he now responds to Fred. I don't like the name much but I am not sure its a good idea to try to change it either.

when I read the first sentence I thought, easy - but maybe a little cheesy....how about Spears.
but then reading further and seeing that it is an Irish setter instead the joke does not really work out.
you mentioned his sweet personality.... so how about Dulci? sweet in Italian. might be more fitting to discover the word for Sweet in the Gaelic tongue?
Irish setters are such a lovely breed. best of luck with him.

Good for you! I think you are doing such a kind thing! If it were me, since it is an irish Setter, I would go with an Irish name. I kind of like Killian, which is a good Irish name!

you know whenever we're having a new puppy, we named him or her after the nickname or surname of those who gave that puppy to us..just to give recognition and appreciation to the giver!!!so whenever we call our pet we remember who gave us that...but in that pound's case, you don't have any info so i suggest to name him anonymous!or to make it short, "nony" or "nymous" for that matter!!!isn't great??!!!anyway its just a mere suggestion...

Kudos to you. I wish more people would be that caring. As for finding a name - you can rename him and he will soon adapt to the new name. Just say the first thing that comes out of your heart when you look into his eyes, that will be perfect name for him.

We thought the same thing but see we got him Tuesday and we have been calling him Fred ( not sure why) ever since. But he doesn't respond at all to the name. We are hoping that maybe someone will suggest a name and as we say it he might respond in some way to let us know we are close to the right name.

Hiya' castleghost! A few years back, I adopted a male chihuahua, and it took one week to actually come up with his name. I had drawn a blank. However, I just continued to look at his features, and his behavior for the following week. One day, it just became so obvious what I would have to call him! He has an underbite, and very often, one of his lower fangs holds his upper lip up to the point that it appears as if he was snickering. He became Sir Snickers Alot, or Snickey for a nickname. It took him about one week to recognize the name, and about one full month before he truly knew his name. Good luck with your new pup!

Thanks for the information. We got our third dog about three months ago but she took to her name like nothing so I was kinda worried with this one. Your avatar is of your dog? If so he is cute.

With a dog it is not the name you give them, but the tone of voice you use to say it. When a dog does something bad your voice sounds angry when you say no. It is very confusing for a dog if you name them with a name that sounds like no...everytime you call the dog it may think you are scolding them.
Name your dog something that suits its personality...and when you call him use a treat, speak in a calm sweet voice, and pet him and love him up when he comes to you...he'll figure it out!!

We have been doing all these things with Freddy. Today he was actually responding to the name that the children gave him. I think one member was right. Freddy just had to learn to trust us. Now he realizes that we aren't going to abandon him.

Well, I liked the name Spears as well. Just like your other friend. Perhaps the dog is still a little traumatized from being in the pound, and not sure of accepting you, or the names you use, for fear he will have to leave again. Kind of depressed. I go for names like Sunshine and things like that. Fred kind of sounds a little downer to me. I like silly names as well. Our cat "Princess" is actually named from the license plate of someone my hubby worked with, who acted like she was a princess. We also call her Inky, because she is black. Creamery just looked soft, and creamy, and so he got that name. Of course, we thought he was a she, so it is a little feminine. If your dog is kind of nosey, he could be Sherlock, or Conan (Arthur Conan Doyle) or even Doyle. Watson? It is easier to name an animal if you are around it awhile.

The children started calling him Fred because of how fast he is. Fast Freddy. I will try out the names you suggested. He is comfortable with us. My fiancee treats him like a lap dog.
