Which laptop?

I work on the internet, using mostly internet applications (FTP, several browsers, various coding editors, etc.) and I'm thinking of buying a laptop to give me more flexibility than the desktop computer. I don't play games or do a lot of media, although I enjoy some audio and video. Can anyone recommend a laptop within a reasonable price range ($1,000 or less)?

LOL this sounds so weird... $1000-00 for a laptop... in South Africa one could never buy a laptop or a desktop for ZAR1000-00 the cheapest and then I mean it is slow and more for the kids is ZAR3000-00 then to get a more decent laptop which is faster then you are looking at about ZAR4500-00 and let me tell you this is then refurbished laptops and desk tops... not even new. But then about what you should buy. Definitely a laptop it is just the best in my opinion. As far as make is concerned... I am a Dell fan. Maybe because I worked for the company for 3 years or so, but I prefer the Dell's. My daughter has a refurbished Dell and it is great... al little slow on the internet side, but great and very user friendly. However, I have an HP Laptop at work and it is just as great. I love my laptop and keep it clean and stuff all the time. Anyway. Those are the only two makes that I would go for. I do not like the Siemens Futjsi at all and their after sales service stinks here. So those are my opinions. Good Luck with your buying and let me know what you settle on once you have bought it...

Thanks for your input! I appreciate it. Wouldn't the exchange rate make a difference in prices?

Well the rate of exchange is about R7-50 to $1 to therefore if you had to purchase a brand new laptop for me at $1000-00 then it would cost me R7500-00 and then you would probably be able to get a better quality one than I could with that type of money... So that is why it would be interesting to see what you can get for a $1000-00 vs what I can get here for the ZAR equivalent of R7500-00. So keep me posted. What make computer do you have at the moment?

I have a desktop e-Machine, which I really like. I don't think they make laptops or I'd be looking at theirs. I'm leaning toward a Dell or a Compaq right now. The exchange rate makes a big difference! :)

Hey there, I got a newsletter from CNet recently saying that there was a guy building laptops for $150. Check it out: http://crave.cnet.com/8301-1_105-9749768-1.html The reviewer bought a laptop and it *was* a flat rate of $150, no shipping charges even! I wish I lived in the US!
