I'm not sure how things work where you live, but in the school board of this area, every student is required to complete 60 hours of community service in order to obtain their high school diploma.
How do you feel about this requirement? Is 60 hours too much or not enough? When I was in high school, I used to think such a requirement was silly, but now I think it's great, as community involvement helps you decide what you want to do in life and it makes an excellent reference.

ya, when i was in Secondary school we have to complete certain hours of community work. I forgotten how long we have to work. But i think 60 is kind of a lot. But it is good to spent time doing community work. I think i enjoy doing it. Now, most people are busy with work and have no time to do community. So i appreciate that school will organized this activity. Anyway, this community will reflect in our report book and Certificate when we graduated from the school.

fortunately i did not experience doing community service. but during our high school days . because our school is a catholic school, we are forced to attend the mass every Sunday. and they even check our attendance.

I think Community service requirements are a great thing! They are starting to pop up all over Texas. 15 hours a year isnt bad at all. Actually 15 hours a semester would be nice. that could be six days of 3 hour long work. No biggie! Keeps kids out of trouble, and may possibly help in determining what they want to pursue.

I agree with the volunteer hours. It might just feel like it's not important when kids are in high school but not only it's a gift to the community but also as you say a good way to have a better idea of different kinds of careers.

i think my son in high school is having this CAT but i think it is more likely to be a community service i think it's every..month or every week, they are mandated to do that cause it is part of their subject MAPEH, and it's part of their curriculum..from CAT they have changed it to community services- or just cleaning the school premises..thanks.

I think that is kind of silly. They didn't have that for me to graduate. It's not really volunterring if you are forced to do it to get something. It's more like free labor. Don't we make criminals do communitty service or volenteer work when they do something bad? What did the schools kids do to desreve this same sentence?

you have 4 years to do 60 hours of community service wow thats hard. yes i am being very sarcastic. i think it should be 100 at least. every kid especally the ones that are given EVERY THING should have to do community service to see that not every one has it that good. they should have to work in a soup kitchen to see what homeless people have to do to get food. they should have to work with habbat for huminaty to feel the accomplishment of giving some one a home. they should have to pick up trash on the side of the road so they see that littering isn't a good idea. doing community service can only bring light to the teenagers eyes. in todays world i think they need that!

Well 60 hours sounds nothing.
Especially if those who do it can learn from it. It could be important but I don't feel it's fair to "make" it mandatory, it should be based on grades and maybe allow this to help push the grades up to get the diploma.
I don't know. I just don't like when people make someone else do things for something which doesn't have anything to do with it really. ~Joey

I think it is great! Kids are isolated in school all day, only reading about life outside those 4 walls in books. By forcing them to get out and get involved in their communities they are getting a first hand experience in the real world. I think 60 hours is a great start, but I think it should be required during their school hours. After school and weekends is nearly impossible when there is homework, studying, and some have jobs. Besides the majority of the world is going on during the same hours that the students are trapped in the schools. They should go out during the week, an hour a day, to work in a food bank or clean a aprk or what ever community service is available that they choose. What a great start to helping kids move from the cage of the school room to the real world.

It's not a requirement where I live, but I think it's a wonderful idea. There is more to education than learning to read, write and do math. Children need to know that the world doesn't revolve around them and they also need to know that they can derive a wonderful sense of accomplishment from helping others more than shopping at the mall. My own son who is graduating taught music in Sunday school for two years and helped with the youth choir. He loved doing it and it made him feel very good.

Well I think community service is a good thing for them to do i think 60 hours are to many .Do they have all 4 years of high school to do them or just there senior year? I know here in USA they have to worry about passing so many test before they can gruaduate so a few maby 20 might be good.
