Metformin (glucophage)

My elderly mother was close to dying thanks to the nasty side effects of metformin. The doctors and pharmacists do not think it important enough to tell people that unless they take the pill with plenty of fiber (like benefiber in water) that the side effect is uncontrollable pooping! Oh yes, it's like a sludge, she could NOT tell it was happening, and she was SO weak from the drug she could not possibly even get up out of bed in time. Add that to the other side effect of joint weakness and joint pain, well it resembled NPH which is fatal! After torturing her with tests she decided that it was indeed the metformin causing all the problems and refused to take it anymore. SHE GOT BETTER. Day by day she got stronger. No more falling down and not being able to get up. The doctor switched her to glucotrol an older med that works just fine with no horrible side effects.
I believe in my heart that the metformin is responsible for her falling and shattering her hip. My mother has very strong bones, she is not frail...or at least she wasn't before this nasty drug.
Has any one else experienced this kind of thing? I honestly don't know why the lawyers haven't gotten hold of this...maybe it's the involuntary pooping that makes people shy away from talking about this. Regardless, this information needs to get out.
Holler back!
Pam
