a good trick is to use pins to hold the zipper in place where you are going to sew it onto the garment i usually use safety pins so they do not accidentally stick into my fingers some people say to unzip the zipper when you go to sew it into place but i like leaving it zipped up that you will just have to try both ways and go with what works best for you i also usually hand sew the zippers onto the piece of clothing it takes longer to do it this way but sometimes it is hard to get to the zipper using a sewing machine with hand sewing them in it is easier not to misplace of stitch

On the garment you're sewing, press the fold where the zipper will be. Unzip the zipper and line it up how you want it (make sure you put it on the right side and everthing) and pin it into place. Make sure the pins run along the zipper, not across it. Once you've sewn in the first side, close the zipper and pin the other side.
That's how I've always done it, and I've never had one turn out bad -- not even my first one, which I was afraid would turn out awful.
