On the cover is Kareena Kapoor, one of India’s biggest Bollywood movie stars, only 23 when I photographed her in her apartment in Mumbai in 2004 while working on an essay about Bollywood. She is an accomplished actress who comes from a family that truly ranks as a Bollywood dynasty, with her grandfather, father, and sister having enjoyed great success and acclaim in the industry. I found Kareena totally unassuming, not at all caught up in her fame.
When producing a portrait with the full knowledge of the subject beforehand, posing someone, if you will, I don’t ask them to look at the camera. I ask them to look at me. I’m making the picture, not the camera. I want some kind of connection between myself and the subject. My hope is to take that connection and make a picture that introduces the person in the photograph to the viewer—even if the viewer is another country or another language removed. So, it’s through me that you see and meet them. When I make a picture that has that connection, I feel it. And if I feel it strongly enough it makes me want to put it in a frame.
