Do you think that entertainers and other person's in the public eye have a moral obligation to society? should they be held to a higher standard for the very fact that they are visible to so many and can influence the populace simply because of their talents?
I feel that we all have an obligation to the society we occupy - and yes, those in the public eye moreso, because more are influenced by them.
I do not think, however, that celebs should be allowed to promote political candidates - using their popularity to sway opinions.

You are so right, I am so tired of little girls emulating britney spears or little boys wanting to be like their favorite jock who ends up in jail for who knows what.
And so right about the political stuff...these are people who sway people's opinions based on their popularity - these are people who have money because they are entertainers..not becasue they are great thinkers.
The other night, I was sort of listening to a show about the 'good girls' of Hollywood. I recognized them all but was not even sure of all of their names. they sounded level headed and hard working. If I see Paris Hilton, I change the channel.
I am glad there are sensible people in Hollywood too.

Celebrities should be held to a higher standard. They often influence the public and for that reason everything they do will be copied more or less by the movers and shakers. The danger in politics is that the entertainer is swayed by other entertainers and the only ones that should sway the public are those we know is a Republican or Democrat or whatever. What happens with the others is that people vote for the candidate that Famous Actress endorsed and when that candidate is elected, they find that he or she has decided to change things a bit.

precisely, I loose an important bit of respect for the candidate that relies on celebrity endorsement instead of standing on his "own two feet" or principals. I want to hear who the candidate is by way of his showing me, not just the latest pretty face.

Personally I do not believe that entertainers should hold the moral high ground, as they are just the same as us and I do not confess to having the perfect life.
To me they do a job the same as the rest of us and that is where it should stop, but sadly the media photograph them and publish their private lifes, which I have no interest in but it makes money as so many sad people want to know the sad lifes of the stars.
I hate it when entertainers decide they are going to take on moral or political issues as I never believe they are doing it out of sincerity, it is just a way to make publicity for themselves.
I do not need Bono to tell me about world poverty while he lives the life of a millionaire or Bob Geldoff who has made such a profit from Live Aid and still the same people are suffering.
I believe they should stick to what they do best and leave the politics to the politians who are doing a good enough job of messing up this world.
Madonna-please crawl under a stone
George Clooney-just shut up
Bono-Nobel Peace Prize, my a@se!!
Clint Eastwood, Arnold Schwarzenegger-leave politics alone!!

I totally agree. Like what does Jane Fonda have to tell me about politics? It really irks me when I see them rallying around someone. Half the time they only choose whom they believe will further their own ratings, etc. I do think they should be held to a higher standard. I mean look at Britney. How many little girls adored her? And what did she do? She turned into Super Ho !! I think if you know you are being watched every secod of every day, you should be on your best behavior. I mean think about it. We all know there are cameras in the store right? We are being watched. So do we dig the annoying wedgie out, or do we wait until we can do it with some privacy? I do think celebrities should be able to have a normallife, dinner with family, etc without being bothered. But they should also compose themselves in a respectable manner. How many every day people go around showing off there nether regions getiing in and out of cars?

That is a bit sticky. I think certain entertainers have an obligation to society. I don't want to find out Mr Rogers or Dr Spock were criminally inclined, especially if those crimes were aimed at children. I would be more inclined to demand that government or religious leaders adhere to a stricter code of behavior, and certainly be law abiding.
Entertainers are just that. Fluff, and I think they are expected to maintain a certain lifestyle. Britney Spears isn't going to influence me to go and shave my head, and just because Lindsey or Paris don't like wearing knickers, should I ever be so insane to wear a micro mini, I assure you I will be wearing my granny bloomers whatever the current trend is.
None of them would influence my political vote! Geldof mat raise money for the third world, but I don't think any less of him because the mother of his daughters od'd on heroin. Nicky and Georgina may be fond of Bertie Ahern, but that doesn't make me think he is a brilliant Taoseach. They aren;t the sort of people who are going to influence me.

Aah, this raises so many questions... Such as, isn't it a denial of the freedom of speech to say a celebrity can't endorse a candidate? On the other hand, I believe that both celebrities and the roles they play in movies and in music--have a certain obligation to be models for society.

I do not really know how you define: moral obligation to society. I know that each one of us define it differently, because we live in different cultures and believe in different things.
I do not think that Entertainers should be obligated to any moral ethics issue.
I know that it is very imported the freedom of their creativity and work.
They should not be limited.

I think that ALL people have a moral obligation to society, as we all live in society. I think the celebs because of their public exposure have more opportunity to share their personal ethics, but that I do not feel that means that they have an obligation to share them. I do, however, think that because of their exposure and influence that they need to be more careful about what they say and do than most people.

to an extent-they should be a good example particularily for youth-not like ms.lohan's "i'm gonna get messed up just cause i'm 21" (well, she actually did before 21)..
but i agree on politics, they should stay out of it.
it doesn't need to mix.

I so agree with you. Anyone who chooses to be a high profile public figure whether in the entertainment industry or politics needs to bear the responsibility that goes with it. They should in fact be held to a higher standard than the rest of us and when they are incarcerating for criminal activities even then they should be made an example of.

I do not think that being role models for the society is a fair thing to ask entertainers. They are doing their job as entertainers and they should not be blamed if some kid decides to follow after them. That should be the parent's responsibility, not the entertainers'

i think some people are born entertainers and should use their talent to the best of their ability.
yes people are influenced by them, but if there influence is a good one surely that is good.
i dont think people should use their talent to swsy or bribe in ant way shape or form!!
