Do you litter?

I don't know if it was Hoot the Owl that fashioned my disdain over litter or what...
But, it really aggravates me when people litter the streets and roadways.
I once witnessed a young man wearing a Proud to Be American shirt (during the first gulf war in the 90s) throw down paper trash with no apparent consciousness to it at all. That really seemed like hypocrisy to me!yesterday my little girl discarded her lolly wrapper on the ground next to the car in a parking lot. I made her go back and pick it up and take it to the trash and explained why we do not do such things.
Now, I do not have a trouble with throwing things like an apple core into the woods as I feel some form of wildlife will eat it and if not it is readily degradable. Do you think that I have double standards?

No, I do the same with food products like apples and such. I do hate seeing people litter. Once in a parking lot, not 10 feet from a garbage can, I saw a woman throw an entire McDonalds bag out her window. She continued to sit there, tossing out various wrappers, cans and such. I got out of my car and loudly said "I guess your feet don't work" Picked up her trash and walked to the tarsh can muttering other things I cannot put here in Mylot for fear of deletion !!

Even i have seen people littering the streets by throwing empty cups and paper napkins thru the car windows, spitting bubblegums on the road, blowing noses and throwing the papers. I'm disgusted by such acts and i never do it myself. i carry a plastic bag in my handbag when i go out, i collect the things to be disposed in the bag and dispose it when i find a public dust bin.

oh yup. that's the perfect word there... disgusting! i have seen those people in cars throwing those stuffs, too right through their windows. i always hope that a police car or a police bike will chase them and give them warnings about this. but does not happen. i hope such strict laws will exist... anne

No, I dont think so, an apple core or the like will not harm anything and Im sure will be eaten by some animals real quickly. But litter is a different story. It looks horrible and dirty and Im glad that I dont contribute to it. I wont even through a smoke butt out (its illegal if you are caught anyway, but a lot of people do it). I use and ashtray in my car , I dont smoke in the streets.

thank you for being so conscientious, a lot of smokers will put their cig.butt whereever they happen to be when they are done with it. a person in my family does this about their patio and yard. it is unbecoming. eventually it does degrade, but meanwhile it is an eyesore and a bit embarrassing.

Not really. Throwing an apple core in the woods is alright. Seeds are part of nature but paper thrown by your daughter is not a part of the concrete parking lot. I really don't like to see garbage around. I always try to pick them up and throw it in the garbage can.

I know just what you mean and this make me so angry too , I live in Scotland and a few weeks ago we went a drive to Loch Lomond it is a lovely place and the have a huge car park , we went to the quiet end of the car park so we could give my Mum and Dad who both have Alzheimer's a cup of tea from the thermos flask , there was a young couple in a fancy sports car only a few steps from the rubbish bin , A lovely car but they didn't want to dirty it , What did they do ? put iyt in the bin? no , opened the car door dropped it in the car park ands drove off , I was just so angry , one step from the car and they could have put it in a bin , laziness or dirty ? xx

i hate seeing people litter on the streets, too. it's too bad. does not matter if they'll see me old fashioned like you. all i know that it's not righ to do so. if there's no trash can around, then put that piece of paper, or candy wrapper inside your pocket first or handbag or backpack. then throw them into the trash can when you see one. is it too difficult to do that? people are so mean these days... i can't imagine. how much more in the future!
well, those degradable stuffs, i just dig out a small hole near a tree at home. will be good as fertilizers to them after sometime.. anne

No, you don't have double standards. I agree with the way you're handling litter. I remember one thing my grandmother told me years ago when I was small. She said that in Sweden, no one littered; but here in the States, people just threw litter anywhere they wanted. That made an impression on me, and I will also go around picking up litter whenever I see it. I also get upset when people throw litter anywhere but in a trash can.

Mee too I don't like trowing any kind of trash in the street or road side it is not appropiate to done those things to our nature. I remember when I was still a kid we leave in the city that anyone who saw litters will be go to jail for an hour to learn his lesson, since that I'm afraid to trow even a candy cover coz I'm afraid that someone is watching me and put me in a jail. I also told this to my daughters so that they will not try to litter.

littering is really a bad act. india is a country with no laws n rules to counter such an activity. but it should be noted that india is at present a litter yard.

littering is a total lack of respect for yourself and the environment. I think fines should be higher for people who litter because we only have one world to live in and we should try to make the best of it otherwise we'll all be screwed.

i never litter. i think that it is very wrong. an apple core is a completely different thing though. it actually helps the soil by decomposing. or some animal will come along and eat it. so i do not think that that is littering.

I don't know who Hoot the Owl is but I hate litter. Yes, I toss apple cores out as well for the same reasons you do. And no, I don't think it's a double standard. I despise people who litter.
I recently saw a child get out of the vehicle, open a candy bar and toss the wrapper over her shoulder. I wanted to point out to the mother that her child had dropped something but I was afraid that the mother would say.."So ....?"
The thing about litter I don't understand and am really intolerant of is when people leave all their rubbish behind at nature reserves and picnic spots. How can people go out to enjoy the fresh air and countryside and then destroy the natural beauty of a place by leaving rubbish everywhere? Especially when there are ample bins provided? I'm really sick of cleaning up after other people.

Maybe that was not his name. In the U.S. in the 70's campaign against littering a commercial with a cartoon owl was created.
This owl sang a catchy little ditty "Give a hoot, don't pollute, never be a dirty bird - in the city or in the woods, help keep America looking good." He was almost as popular as Smokey Bear.

I am a responsible person and I am not a litterbug. I make it a point to throw things in the proper places and not just throw them anywhere. I must also show that I am a good example to my younger brothers and sisters and I must show the right behavior .
