I already have factory-pressed copies of Ubuntu Feisty Fawn (Linux) for both 32 and 64-bit machines. It's okay, and even recognizes all my hardware right out of the box (not everyone is so lucky). However, Linux still takes a lot more know-how than Windows. For example, I had to kick-start my WiFi with manual configuration before I could get online, unheard of on a Windows machine. And the driver for my printer takes more than the simple opening of a software installer. There are hoops to jump through, and terminology that I'm not savvy on yet. What's incredible is the fact that open source loyalists will ALWAYS swear it's more stable than Windows. They must all be talking about a different distro or something, because it doesn't take much to completely lock up my machine when Ubuntu is on it, even after a fresh installation. Apple is decent, but I like being able to upgrade individual parts, rather than whole machines only. That gets expensive, not mentioning that Macs tend to be more expensive than most equivalent PCs (maybe not a Sony). And all this in spite of the fact that the fastest PC is faster than the fastest Mac. One nice thing about Linux is that each new version seems to be backwards compatible. If there's one beef I have with Microsoft above all else, it's the fact that almost every single program you have will have to be replaced if and when you decide to upgrade. My newest machine came with Vista Home Basic. After creating the restore media, I blasted the hard drive and installed XP Pro. There may be something good about Vista in the next couple of years, but I'm not going to sit with a useless "toy" while I wait. And I do wonder what Microsoft intends to do (if ever) about the fact that Vista's content protection makes it completely incompatible with all HD video formats? Peter Gutmann had plenty to say about that one, which was said in a not-so-nice, long article: http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/vista_cost.html Windows and its maker have a lot of faults, to be sure. But I still stick with XP because it's stable (despite what some Mac and Linux users seem to think), works with everything, and makes magic even when its end user is not a programmer. And if you hunt down some of my past posts, you'll find that I discovered how to make it invincible. Yes, I said it...invincible. I will never buy a Mac, because of the restriction on hardware. And Linux's biggest problem seems to be the fact that there aren't enough people working 40 hours a week on any one distro. These little "mountain tribes" just don't have the organization that a "kingdom" like Microsoft, or even Apple, has. That might explain why there aren't any distros available that offer the user-friendliness of their commercial betters. I've tried Ubuntu; I've tried Mandriva; I'm not impressed. I've heard that "Bianca" is supposed to be really user-friendly, but I understand it's noticeably unstable yet. Linux is not ready for Prime Time. And given the time the open source community has had to get it together, I seriously doubt they'll be ready any time soon. I'm not holding my breath. One thing that might make me switch, however, would be for ReactOS to release a stable version that will install on my machine. If they ever release a final version, and that release airs, M$ could be in big trouble. And that's coming from a Microsoft loyalist since DOS 5. Salute! -santuccie P.S.: Laughing at dumb jokes is still good for your health!!! P.P.S.: I realize there are a lot of strong words here that might offend someone. If they do, please accept my preemptive apologies. I don't mean to offend; these are just my opinions based on my experience. My experience is not exhaustive, but it's certainly not minute, either. ;)
