When it's Cold? Here in Australia it is winter and the nights have been mighty cold. I was wondering If people left their heating on over night??? I turn mine on in the late afternoon depending but ususally around 4pm and turn it off when I go to bed and I set it to come on in the morning at 6am and turn it off about 9-10am again and give it a rest although somedays the house gets really cold so I turn it back on throught the day... Please share what you do with your heating and what type it is?

I am from Australia too, Adelaide in fact. The nights have been freezing, literally. No, I don't leave the heating on overnight, as it is too expensive. Either my husband or myself turn it on in the morning. If I am the only one home, I turn it off aftr the early morning cold, & prefer to waer a warm jumper. I may have to to turn the heating on aghain around 12 noon, or 3.00pm. It then needs to stay on until we are all in bed. Basicly, I try to keep the heater off for as much as possible, & only use it for early moring & night. My husband, however, wants to keep it on all day. So I dread to think of the next electricty bill.

We have a 2 story home so downstairs can get really cold so usually the bottom heater is always the one used and as I said comes on in the morning than turned off during the day and than turned on again around 3-4pm, Then off at night. My partner is pretty much the same as yours, It's freezing leave it on, but than he will walk outside or in tha garage and leave the door open and that annoys the hell out of me... He also has a heater in the garage but that is hardly used... Although a few weeks ago he left it on and I was mega peeved about it..I didn't even know he had turned it on and he didn't even know he left it on....

Hello, pinklilly,i do not use the heating now,i think melbourne is colder than sydney, the temperature here is around 13 degree and i can still bear the coldness when i wear more clothes. Also I am afraid i will have to pay an expensive bills if i leave the heater overnight. So how much do you pay for the electricity in the winter?

Yeah Melbourne is usually always colder than Sydney, Today in fact it is only meant to get to 11c possible Thunderstorms although it looks ok outside now... I'v just changed companys in hope to get a lower bill(so they reckon) it is usually between 350-450 for 3months sometimes more sometimes less but that also depends on other electronic factors. If my partner is working in the garage alot with power tools and the compressor and welder that uses alot of power and results in a large bill...

I live in Tasmania, where it is so cold that the water in the hose froze overnight, and we had to turn it on for a while to make the water run through so we could hose the cars off. We have a heat pump - which is like an airconditioner, but in reverse, and run that all night. It gets so cold that it cuts out due to the fact that it can't cope with it as the main part is outside. We have it set to come on at 3 in the afternoon, and then it turns off at 8.20 - which is about the time the kids leave to go on the school bus. My youngest (5) still wets the bed on occasion, so we can't have an electric blanket on her bed, and the others are fine. It was so cold this morning that the water in the bird bath froze, so I hit that with the hose when I was hosing my car off as well.

Melbourne girl here, as you know :) I usually have my heating on about the same times as you do. From late afternoon until my son goes to bed between 7 and 8 at night, becuase his room is always the first to overheat and I don't want to bake him whilst he is asleep ;) lol My partner usually turns it on when he leaves for work in the morning at about 5.30, and I turn it off when I get up, about 7. Ducted heating works really well, which is what we have, so i find I don't have to keep it on for extended periods of time, and as long as I don't leave any doors or windows open, I find the house retains teh heat really well...

ducted heating is good because it warms the house evenly and it doesn't need to be on all the time just enough to take the chill out of the house.. I have split sytems one upstairs and one downstairs and you need to open bedroom doors up if you want to to get a little warmth otherwise they stay cold..... I'm glad to see that we are already starting to see some spring weather here in Melb... Don't need to keep the heating on as much :)

My water bed is heated and I turn it right down in the morning when I get up then at about 7pm I put it up ready for when I get in at about 10pm or 11pm. I have a heater in my office and it's a small room so I can have it on low and be snuggly. I still wear lots of clothes so I can save on the energy and the cost. My kitchen warms up when I cook so that's good and I have a heater in the lounge room for when I watch TV. Heating costs are extortionate.

Hi Pinklilly. I am from Sydney and yes it's been mighty cold lately. I haven't left the heating on all night but there are times I accidently leave the electric blanket on. I mean to turn it off, but then find I doze off and it's still on in the morning.

My partner also has the electric blanket on but tends to turn it off after he's in bed or when he wakes through the night, I usually wake and hear him, sometimes he will turn it back on early hours of the morning than off again befor he gets out.... The electric blanket probably uses more power anyaway????? :D

Well, right now here in the USA, it is summer. We have been in the 80s and 90s so if I had an Air Conditioner, we would have that running a lot of the time now. Anyways, when it is winter and cold enough to need to run the Heater, I am known to turn it down lower during the day while we are at work, and then again usually at night when we are sleeping as well. I am one who prefers it cooler when I sleep at night anyway if I can.

Wow, I wish it were cold here! I live in Singapore and right now the weather is soooo hot, even though it's been raining. :( I used to live in Taiwan before... during winter, we always had the heater on. We never switched it off, even when we werent at home. I think if you live in a cold country, the heater is something you can't do without. The cold can really be unbearable and make it hard to be productive. Once when we were out, our heater broke down, and when we got back the entire place was really really cold, especially the floor! I hate stepping on cold floors, especially when you just wake up! If it's possible, why not leave the heater on all the time? At least, it's justifiable. Being cold will stop you from getting work done; being hot doesn't. That's why I say, you can do without the aircon, but you can't do without a heater!

We have a gas furnace that is controled by a thermostat so i can set my thermostat at 80 and the heater wont kick on until it gets cold enough to do so. I leave it set at a certain temp all winter long unless it gets colder then i turn it up or if it gets warmer i turn it down.

well pinklilly..It seems you are fighting against cold.Infact the other comments in this topic showing a sign of battle with heater against cold..I like winter but I do not have to use room heater as the temperature does not cross below 8 degree celcius during Winter. So I enjoy winter sleeping under thick blanket in holidays...when I do not allow anyone to disturb..lol.Sorry to say .that.you have to keep your room heater on which increase your monthly expense. But winter has its own sweet flavour.I enjoy it..

I would love to have a kanara and be in the snow for a winter season I think that would be lovely... It is because I have children that the heating is mainly on as my son doesn't like to wear jumpers...Our night tempretures have been around the 1 degree celcius mark lately, rather chilly....

We have left the boiler on at night,if the wearther has been extremely cold, but only if its below freezing, its just that we hate to let the house get stone cold,it seems to take forever to warm up again,we use gas for our boiler, there are other types of fuel,LPG and coal and wood, but the gas boiler was in when we oved to this house,so it stays for now

I have found it hard to heat up the house sometimes when we have been away for a few days and it has been really cold and the house feels colder than outside and takes days to get back to Normal... It is Nice to Wake up to a warm house rather than stone cold...

I do most of my baking during the weeknights to add some warmth to the living areas. The smell of homemade bread or cookies is wonderful. The baked goods are shared with coworkers and of course my hubby gets some too. The craft work becomes a focus for me.

Here in Washington state, we have a lot of 'cool and wet' weather. We have electric forced-air central heating which we keep at 67 degrees at all times. We have small circulating oil heaters in a couple of rooms that need a bit more warmth, like where our bird is. And we own lots of sweaters! If we turn our heat off at night, the dampness is a real problem, causing mold on the windows, etc. We keep the house at just the right temp. to save us having to deal with those issues. And we are quite comfortable.
