if they are living in a fish bowl that you clean make sure you rinse very carefully. I used to clean by fish bowl with windex and even after rinsing i suppose there will still traces of ammonia from the windex and i guess it killed the fish. Also urea from fish and chlorine from water won't help matters much.

whenever you buy fish or any pet, try to talk to the petshop attendant first before leaving. they do know a lot about how to keep our pets alive. they will give you clues and hints on how to keep them healthy. maybe you did not put medicines such as anti-chlorin in the water. or no airpump was installed... stuffs like that. don't put too many decorations inside your aquarium, too. might be destructive to the fish. or better yet, read some books about how to take care of them. or read somthing online... you'll surely know a lot and soon, you'll be able to keep them alive... anne

Never clean your tank with soap, it will kill your fish and you can almost never get the soap out. Second is that your tank was not "cycled" yet. Fish give off ammonia as part of their by products and ammonia is poisonous to fish. There is a bacteria that will break up this ammonia into nitrites, and nitrites are poisonous to fish also but not as poisonous as ammonia. Next there is another bacteria that will break this nitrite into nitrate which is not too bad for the fish. This takes some time for the bacteria to grow into enough to take care of all of the fish that yo can have in the tank. so you do not want to add too many fish in the tank at first. You should test the water for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate while the cycling is taking place so that you can know where the cycling is so that you can add fish when the ammonia and nitrite are at zero. To get rid of nitrate you should do weekly partial water changes with water that does not contain chlorine, chloramine or heavy metals.

Dude, are you a beginner? If so, try easy to maintain freshwater fishes. Saltwater fishys are high maintainence and require lots of attention. They need proper amount of sea salt, ph level must be correct, amonia level must be good and so on. There must be good water cycle too~ my suggestion: +Get a big enough aquarium (2 FEET)? +Get proper aquarium lighting for fish and plants. +Get a good filter system! (Add carbon if you can; removes bad fishy smell) +Get live plants, They provide additional oxygen and hiding spots. (home for fish that like to hide) +Get small freshwater fishes. (Tetras[many kinds available], Cory catfish, guppies and a couple of ghost shrimps) +DONT FORGET ANTI CHLORINE! and fish food of coz (sinking and floating pellets). *Do not over feed, Feed 2 times a day, 12 hours apart. *Do water changes once a week. [50%] only change half max! You should be having a long time of fun with your fish if you stick to good habit of changing water and not over feeding. You can have a look at my tank some time ago. The fishes i mentioned are in this video! http://video.yahoo.com/video/play?vid=719176
