PeTA = People against Pet Ownership

Sometimes I wonder, why does PeTA try to get pet owners on their side? It's obvious they do, telling kids that if their daddy goes fishing, they better look out or else he might try to kill the family dog. Look at PeTA's website, everywhere there are pictures of cute little doggies, most likely one that looks like you or your friend once had. In other words, the images they use are to pull on the heart strings of people who love dogs, and probably own dogs. But what they don't mention is that the heads of Peta don't WANT you to own dogs, cats, or any other type of animal. Want proof? How about straight from the horse's mouth. "Pet ownership is an absolutely abysmal situation brought about by human manipulation." -- Ingrid Newkirk national director, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA) "In a perfect world, all other than human animals would be free of human interference, and dogs and cats would be part of the ecological scheme." --PeTA's Statement on Companion Animals. "The bottom line is that people don't have the right to manipulate or to breed dogs and cats ... If people want toys, they should buy inanimate objects. If they want companionship, they should seek it with their own kind," -- Ingrid Newkirk, national director, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals "In the end I think it would be lovely if we stopped this whole notion of pets altogether." - Ingrid Newkirk, national director, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals The head of Peta herself saying that pet ownership is wrong. Feel duped pet-owning Peta supporters? I bet you do, and you should. If you care about animal rights but also believe in owning pets, find a group that supports what you believe. Don't settle for a group that secretly sees you as the enemy just because it's the most well known group. Are you a pet owner? Drop the term 'animal rights' from your vocabulary right now, use the words 'animal welfare' instead. Why? Animal rights, as a philosophical viewpoint, is fundamentally different from animal welfare, since it maintains that animals are not ours to use at all-for food, clothing, entertainment (including companionship), or experimentation. Animal Welfare endorses the responsible use of animals to satisfy certain human needs - from companionship and sport, to uses that involve the taking of life, such as for food, clothing, and medical research. Animal welfare advocates seek to ensure that all animals used by humans have their basic needs fulfilled in terms of food, shelter, and health, and that they experience no unnecessary suffering in providing for human needs. Animal lovers, however, are often unaware of the distinction. Even celebrities get caught in the cycle of wanting to help animals, without realizing what their affiliation with an organization bent on abolishing pet ownership is really doing... promoting it. I'll bet celebrities like Pamela Anderson and Alicia Silverstone wouldn't be so keen on their PeTA affiliations if it meant they couldn't keep their dogs as pets anymore. If you want to help animals, volunteer for a breed rescue, your local humane society, the ASPCA or an animal WELFARE group like the ones seen here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_animal_welfare_groups Still not enough to convince you to stop sending your yearly cheque to PeTA? "Our nonviolent tactics are not as effective. We ask nicely for years and get nothing. Someone makes a threat, and it works." - Ingrid Newkirk, PeTA, US News and World Report, April 8, 2002 How do you like supporting terrorists? 1) PeTA contributed $1,500 to the Earth Liberation Front in the year 2001. The ELF has been designated a terrorist organization by the FBI. And PeTA is a tax-exempt organization. 2) Rodney Coronado is an Animal Liberation Front operative who served some 4 years for having torched a Michigan State University lab on Feb. 28, 1992 (the ALF has also been designated a terrorist organization by the FBI). More interesting, immediately before and after the MSU fires, Coronado mailed two packages, one to PeTA founder Ingrid Newkirk, the other to PeTA member Maria Blanton, who Newkirk had asked to receive the package. Records found at Blanton's home showed that Coronado planned additional attacks on universities, one of which involved Alex Pacheco, another PeTA founder. A footnote states: "Significantly, Newkirk had arranged to have the package delivered to her days before the MSU arson occurred." If you take the time to read the sentencing memorandum here: http://www.cdfe.org/Coronado%20Sentencing.pdf you will learn much history about extremist animal right's groups and some damning evidence that PeTA was involved. And PeTA is a tax-exempt organization. 3) PeTA contributed at least $45,200 to the Rodney Coronado Support Fund. And PeTA is a tax-exempt organization. 4) On its own website, PeTA likens the ALF to the Underground Railway and to the French resistence, defends violent actions (including vandalism and arson) in the name of animal liberation, and conveniently overlooks the injurious and life-threatening hazards to first-responders, pedestrians and motorists created when emergency vehicles dash to the conflagrations created by ALF "freedom fighters," and when firefighters fight the arsonist's blaze. And PeTA is a tax-exempt organization. 5) PETA also gave $5,000 to the Josh Harper Support Committee, before Harper was convicted of "animal enterprise terrorism" in the U.S. in connection with the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty campaign. Just in case any of this IS getting through to you and you're now feeling as angry as I am about that $25 cheque you used to send them, feel free to sign a petition located here http://www.consumerfreedom.com/news_detail.cfm?headline=2320 asking the IRS to yank PeTA's tax exempt status for funding terrorist movements. If, on the other hand, you're still convinced that PeTA's 'not that bad' I suggest you do some research for yourself. Try http://www.petakillsanimals.com/ for starters, then try http://www.animalscam.com/ Now, I'm not saying that all PeTA members are at fault, because it's possible that they thought they were doing a very noble thing indeed, but if you do your research to decipher what the organization is really about and what it really stands for, you'll learn that a lot of things can't be taken at face value. I'll leave you with one last thought, one animal lover to another: According to PeTA's own filings, in 2004 PeTA killed 86.3 percent of the animals entrusted to its care -- a number that's rising. Meanwhile, the SPCA in PeTA's home town (Norfolk, Va.) was able to find loving homes for 73 percent of the animals put in its care. A shortage of funds? Nope: last year PeTA took in $29 million in tax-exempt donations. Please, stop sending that cheque. I'd like to thank all the people who allowed me to use their research and findings in this discussion.

I am so glad you posted this!!! Thank you!!! I agree with everything you're saying, I'm not at all a fan of Peta. I used to be a member, but soon realized it was one of the worst things I could be doing for animals, especially my own pets! I own Pit Bulls, and would never be a part of an organization that thought they should all be euthanised. Peta thrives on fads and pop culture, and they should be shut down. Let the REAL animal lovers get out there and save them!!!

I'd like to thank you for posting this. I've always had something against PeTA, mostly because I found they were far too radical and so would put people more easily against them, but reading this has now fully made me understand why I dislike them. I am a pet owner, but I firmly believe in animal welfare. I find that Ingrid Newkirk is living in lala land and almost find it insulting that she suggests I should find a human companion - that's an assumption that I don't have one when I do! Some people prefer the company of animals above humans and would rather avoid dealing with people. And what would we do with the animals who have been pets for years? It's ingrained in their system, they'd never survive outside in the wilderness. In a utopia it might work, but she has obviously not thought this through.

Very informative. Very glad you posted this. I'm shocked you haven't gotten more responses. I'm just disgusted by PETA now. I had no idea that an 'animal rights' organization was this.......BRAZENLY HYPOCRITICAL! Thank goodness I have never contributed to them. I'm so sad that so many have though. Money gives them power, unfortunately. So let's cut that flow off. I'm off to sign the petition. I hope many more do, too, until PETA is defeated.
